1974 uzyskał tytuł licencjata z inżynierii lotniczej i kosmicznej na Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
1974 rozpoczął pracę w Langley Research Center w Wirginii należącym do NASA jako naukowiec w Thermal Structures Branch of the Structures and Materials Division i był odpowiedzialny za wykazanie wykonalności krawędzi natarcia chłodzonej rurami cieplnymi dla wahadłowca kosmicznego poprzez analizę, eksperymenty laboratoryjne i testy aerotermiczne w tunelu wysokiej temperatury Langley.
1980 uzyskał tytuł magistra inżynierii mechanicznej na George Washington University.
1989 dr Camarda został wybrany do kierowania zespołem ds. rozwoju technologii struktur i materiałów w ramach programu NASP (National Aero-Space Plane), który odpowiadał za dojrzewanie technologii materiałów i struktur niezbędnych do umożliwienia opracowania ciśnieniowego hipersonicznego pojazdu zdolnego do poziomego startu na orbitę.
1990 uzyskał tytuł doktora w dziedzinie inżynierii lotniczej i kosmicznej na Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
1994 Camarda został wybrany na stanowisko szefa TSB (Thermal Structures Branch), odpowiadając za zespół inżynierów badawczych, dwa główne programy HSR (High-Speed Research) i RLV (Reusable Launch Vehicle) oraz kilka obiektów testowych konstrukcji, w tym Thermal Structures Laboratory.
Niektóre z głównych obowiązków TSB to rozwój trwałych, lekkich metalowych TPS (Thermal Protection Systems,
zaawansowanych krawędzi natarcia dla pojazdów hipersonicznych wykorzystujących materiał węglowo-węglowy i rury cieplne, wielokrotnego użytku systemy zbiorników kriogenicznych i grafitowo-kompozytową strukturę podstawową dla RLV.
1998 po ukończeniu dwuletniego szkolenia podstawowego uzyskał kwalifikacje specjalisty misji i został przydzielony do
Spacecraft Systems/Operations Branch w Biurze Astronautów NASA.
03.2002 roku został włączony do załogi rezerwowej 8. Ekspedycji na ISS, zastępując Johna Phillipsa (https://www.forum.kosmonauta.net/index.php?topic=6335.msg198332#msg198332)).
Szkolił się jako członek załogi w USA i Rosji do 02.2003, kiedy to na skutek katastrofy wahadłowca Columbia załoga ISS została zredukowana do dwóch osób.
Szkolenie załogi ISS-8D (L. Chiao (https://www.forum.kosmonauta.net/index.php?topic=6264.msg197246#msg197246), M. Kornijenko (https://www.forum.kosmonauta.net/index.php?topic=6333.msg198312#msg198312), Ch. Camarda) zostało przerwane.
11.2003 roku został przydzielony do załogi STS-114 Atlantis jako specjalista misji (MS-5), później załogę przeniesiono do wahadłowca Discovery.
Po licznych przełożeniach, w 05.2005 start zaplanowano na 13.07.2005.
Na 2,5 h przed startem odwołano go z powodu awarii jednego z czujników paliwa.
Po ocenie sytuacji i przeprowadzeniu prac naprawczych, nową datę startu wahadłowca ustalono na 26.07.2005.
Misja STS-114 Discovery (https://www.spaceline.org/united-states-manned-space-flight/space-shuttle-mission-program-fact-sheets/sts-114/) po raz drugi za dowódcę wahadłowca miała kobietę (Eileen Collins).
Około 2,5 sekundy po starcie duży ptak uderzył w górną część ET.
Mały fragment płytki termicznej, szacowany na ok. 38 mm został oderwany z płytki krawędziowej przednich drzwi podwozia przed rozłączeniem SRB.
W T+127,1 s i 5,3 s po oddzieleniu się SRB , duży kawałek szczątków oddzielił się od rampy PAL (Protuberance Air Load) , która jest częścią ET.
Jesień 2005 awansował do kategorii menedżerów astronautów i rozpoczął pracę jako p.o. dyrektora (od 05.2006- Senior Advisor for Innovation) w Office of Chief Engineer.
04.2020 jego biografia na oficjalnej stronie NASA ujawniła, że opuścił agencję w 2019.
Camarda otrzymał ponad 21 nagród NASA za innowacje techniczne i osiągnięcia.
Otrzymał również nagrodę Research and Development 100 od Industrial Research Magazine za jedną ze
100 najlepszych innowacji technicznych 1983 roku zatytułowaną „Heat-Pipe-Cooled Sandwich Panel”.
Autor artykułów na temat ochrony termicznej.
Posiada patenty w tej dziedzinie.

Actually, cancelling SLS and the current architecture will improve our chances of getting back to the Moon and Mars. NASA leaders for the past 30-40 years have ensured that what made NASA great, its research engineering expertise, was completely eroded.
The lack of technical leadership at the top levels of NASA almost caused two accidents following Columbia and allowed 8 additional launches with serious wing leading edge defects! We need major changes and cuts in key congressional districts unfortunately!
