Record-holding astronaut Peggy Whitson and mission pilot John Shoffner to lead Axiom Space’s Ax-2 mission to enable new research in space

Houston – Axiom Space on Tuesday revealed the commander and pilot of its second commercial mission proposed to fly to the International Space Station and announced the proposed crew’s intended research while on orbit. Axiom will compete to fly the Ax-2 mission when NASA announces the next private astronaut mission opportunity. If awarded, Ax-2 will further the Houston-based space infrastructure leader’s expansion of the commercial human spaceflight market and cement the research opportunities it can make possible for private industry in low-Earth orbit.
Whitson, one of the world’s most revered astronauts who during a 22-year career at NASA became the ISS’ first female commander, the first ISS Science Officer, and set and still holds the American record for time spent in space, will return to flight as a private citizen and commander of Ax-2. Alongside her as the planned mission pilot will be John Shoffner – a pilot, champion GT racer, and active supporter of life science research from Knoxville, Tenn.
Whitson and Shoffner will train together in Axiom’s standard astronaut program to prepare them to lead the flight. In addition to their flight training, they will learn how to translate terrestrial single-cell genomic methods to an orbital science process in collaboration with Pleasanton, Calif.-based 10x Genomics, a global leader in developing products to master biology for advancing human health whose offerings are used by all of the top 100 global research institutions.
“I’m thrilled to get to fly to space again and lead one of the first of these pioneering missions, marking a new era of human spaceflight,” Whitson said. “But even more than that, I’m eager for the chance on Ax-2 to open space up to the first full generation of private astronauts and directly link John to the research opportunities on the ISS. In the time we’ve already spent together as crewmates, it’s clear to me that John will be an excellent pilot and researcher. It’s a pleasure to take him under my wing.”
The mission will complete an unconventional path to space for Shoffner, a lifelong athlete and health & science enthusiast.
"Growing up, I closely followed every NASA flight of Gemini and Apollo,” Shoffner said. "Now to experience astronaut training teamed with Peggy is an honor. I am also excited about our upcoming work with 10x Genomics in this first step towards making their single-cell technologies available to researchers in a microgravity environment. I look forward to the process of testing and validating this technology for future groundbreaking work in low-Earth orbit.”
In addition to standard training on ISS systems, Shoffner will receive specialized spacecraft operations training to assist the commander during flight as pilot of the crew capsule and develop with Whitson the protocols necessary to conduct single-cell sequencing experiments in microgravity.
Whitson and Shoffner are also currently training to serve as backup commander and pilot for Axiom’s Ax-1, the first-ever fully private mission to the ISS slated for launch on a SpaceX Crew Dragon in early 2022. As with this proposed Ax-2 mission, Axiom will also compete for the opportunity to fly commercial missions to the ISS approximately every six months, subject to NASA approval and as traffic to the ISS allows.

Jest tytuł wątku po polsku :)
Wg mnie dla zrozumienia tych prostych tekstów wystarczy technika, jedynie przy tłumaczeniu TT trzeba w nie wejść.
Można też automatycznie pewne rzeczy tłumaczyć (nieco ułomnie zresztą), ale wydaje mi się, że przyszłościowe narzędzia tłumaczące mogą być bardziej dokładne i mss nie chce tymi niedoskonałościami razić przyszłych pokoleń czytających ;)
Jest też już jakiś artykuł po polsku.

Zgadzam się, polski język nam całkowicie zaniknie jak tak dalej będzie. Polskojęzyczne forum powinno być po Polsku. Uważam, że powinna być zasada, że każdy post powinien mieć przynajmniej streszczenie po polsku. Jaki jest sens zapisywać się na takie forum jak na anglojęzycznych jest dużo więcej informacji?

Wiadomości np. na TT niekoniecznie w tym samym czasie pojawiają się. Poza tym do 1 postu można tylko 4. zdjęcia zamieścić. Wiadomo też , że wiadomości TT nie są wieczne.
"I’m so excited" - wg mnie ważniejsze od samych słów jest to, kto je wypowiada. Czy przede wszystkim ?
Nie wiem czy takie uogólnienie jest zasadne, skoro tych TT tak niewiele się w tym wątku pojawiło.
Trudno obyć się bez zdjęć, zwłaszcza wtedy kiedy one już są. Na razie jest ich zresztą też niewiele.
Kiedyś więcej w paru postach zamieściłem wiadomości obrazowych i teraz zrobiło się wiele powtórzeń w ramach niektórych postów i przeniesienie zdjęć do załączników musiałoby się wiązać z selekcją, albo przemodelowaniem ilości postów.

Powtarzanie przez uwypuklenie faktów z artykułu, co można też np. czynić w ramach komentarzy przez innych.
W sumie wraz z artykułami pojawiło się nieco nowości.
W poniższym artykule astronautka wyraża zaskoczenie z kontynuacji kosmicznej przygody.
Ciekawe, którzy jeszcze byli astronauci dołączą do Axiom ?

Poza tym pozostaje też pytanie czy dla Europy (jako ESA) takie krótkie loty byłyby atrakcyjne, a może tylko dla krajów z mniejszym zaangażowaniem w program załogowy na ISS ?
Tutaj kłania się przykład astronauty z Danii (http://lk.astronautilus.pl/astros/541.htm), który od czasu zakończenia programu STS pozostaje jedynym Europejczykiem, który odbył krótki lot.

Na NSF ukazał się dwa dni temu bardzo ciekawy artykuł o zamierzeniach firmy Axiom. Odnośnie lotu AX-2 zamieszczono tam ważną informację uzyskaną od NASA:
A previous version of this story stated that the Axiom-2 mission was scheduled to follow Axiom-1 in Autumn 2022. NASA reached out to NASASpaceflight to clarify that Axiom-2 is not a planned mission at this time but rather that NASA has received proposals for the second and third private astronaut mission opportunities but has not made any selections or announcements.
Okazuje się, że NASA nie ma w planach lotu AX-2, co jest istotne, jako że lot ten ma być do ISS. NASA otrzymała od Axiom tylko propozycję lotów AX-2 i AX-3, ale na tym się skończyło.

I takie pytanie zadaje ktoś, kto zna się na załogowej astronautyce, jak mało kto :)
Pytanie Newmana nie brzmiało "czy?", ale "dlaczego?". Bo że zawsze się opóźnia (poza programem Apollo), to wszyscy wiemy :).
Myślę, że główne przyczyny są dwie:
1. Bo podając mało realnie krótkie terminy, jak i zaniżone koszty, łatwiej uzyskać finansowanie,
2. Bo w technice nawet najdrobniejsza nieprzewidziana sytuacja prowadzi do opóźnień, a bardzo rzadko do przyspieszenia.

Co się dzieje, że "... nie ujawniło ..."?
W przypadku Axiom-1 cała załoga była ujawniona (ogłoszona) w listopadzie 2020 - wtedy kiedy planowano, że lot odbędzie się w końcu 2021 - czyli na cały ROK wcześniej.
Ostatecznie misja Axiom poleciała w kwietniu, ale to nie z powodu wynikającego ze składu załogi.
Teraz lot ma się odbyć w II kwartale 2023 (i jest to termin już kilkakrotnie przesuwany).
Licząc optymistycznie: mamy początek września - do kwietnia, czyli pierwszego miesiąca drugiego kwartału mamy SIEDEM miesięcy.
Licząc pesymistycznie: do czerwca, czyli ostatniego miesiąca drugiego kwartału mamy DZIEWIĘĆ miesięcy.
A pełny skład załogi nie jest ujawniony!?
Czy nie ma chętnych do lotu?
To by źle wróżyło lotom turystycznym.
Mam nadzieję, jednak chętni są.
Może już nawet gdzieś trochę trenują.

Gdzie-niegdzie się ćwierka, że rozważana już kiedyś dwójka Cruise i Liman. Ale nie przywiązywałbym do tego większej wagi.

Cruise i Liman to już byli wymieniani w pierwszym Axiomie.
Rosjanie (jak w latach sześćdziesiątych) wyprzedzili Amerykanów wysyłając aktorkę i reżysera w zeszłym roku, więc teraz już nikt inny ze branży filmowej nie pochwali się, że nakręcił coś w kosmosie jako "pierwszy w świecie".
W pytaniu o ujawnianiu się składu załogi chodzi mi o to, że dotychczasowi kosmiczni "turyści" chcieli budzić duże zainteresowanie mediów.
Nawiasem mówiąc byli tacy, którym bardziej zależało na zainteresowaniu niż na locie.
Dlatego dziwię się, że kandydaci do Axioma-2 teraz tak chronią swoje nazwiska i nie prężą się przed kamerami i obiektywami.

Rozumiem, że NIE dotyczy to udziału w misji Axiom-2, skoro w artykule jest mowa o prowadzeniu wielomiesięcznego szkolenia.

“You get a sunset or a sunrise every 22 and a half minutes. If you hang out long enough, you’ll catch the sunrise. Angles of the sun come slicing across depending on where you are. Sometimes you’ll get these huge clouds. If you’re over some weather, then you get these awesome shadow structures.”
Shoffner says that he will have to be prepared while photographing from the ISS which travels at 70,000 miles per hour meaning the scenery changes extraordinarily quickly.
“I’ll have to be in position before something interesting happens so that I’m ready for it. Oftentimes, I’ll be away from the windows doing work… but I’ll always be thinking about what’s outside of the window. If I want to capture a certain picture, I’ll have to be there before that,” he says.
Shoffner doesn’t need to worry too much about gear; the ISS has over 20 Nikon D5 cameras with an assortment of lenses onboard. Although, he will be bringing two D6s with him anyway.
“Most of my work will be in the 24mm range. Don Pettit gave me great advice. My mission is 12 days long and he suggested leaning into the 24mm, as it won’t replicate some of the things you can find on Google,” he adds.

Shoffner is no professional with the camera but has long been an enthusiast buying a Canon F1 with money he saved from a newspaper round when he was 12 years old.
“I had a darkroom in my house as a kid, so love it. I stopped for some reason… I’m not really sure why. Going to space and photography are both lifelong passions of mine that I set aside for too long. I couldn’t drown them out any longer…. so here we are doing both,” he says.

Piloting Dragon Freedom tonight is veteran airshow pilot, athlete and motorsports endurance racer John Shoffner, with Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) Capt. Ali Al-Qarni and biomedical research scientist Rayyanah Barnawi of Saudi Arabia rounding out the quartet as Mission Specialists. Część misji Ax-2 stanowi projekt naukowy Nebula, którego celem jest zbadanie fizjologicznych reakcji organizmu na lot kosmiczny, a zwłaszcza - na warunki mikrograwitacji. W ramach projektu przewidziano badanie przepływu krwi do mózgu, jego aktywności elektrycznej, ocena nadciśnienia śródczaszkowego poprzez nieinwazyjne badanie źrenicy oka i monitoring zmian w nerwie wzrokowym. Badania te mają znaczenie w kontekście przyszłego, długotrwałego przebywania człowieka w przestrzeni kosmicznej i opracowania nowych, nieinwazyjnych metod monitoringu organizmu.
W trakcie misji ma być wykorzystany sprzęt do badania aktywności mózgu - bezprzewodowy system fNIRS "Photon Cap", przystosowany do warunków lotów kosmicznych, opracowany przez polską firmę neurotechnologiczną Cortivision.

Urządzenie zostało stworzone przez zespół naukowców z Lublina z firmy neurotechnologicznej CortiVision. Kosmonauci mając na głowie polskie urządzenie wykonują szereg czynności. Są to zadania typu czytanie tekstu na głos, bilateral finger tapping czy zadania związane z ekspozycją kosmonautów na wizualne bodźce, jak wizualna migająca szachownica.
Co ciekawe, nasi naukowcy pokonali konkurencję z najlepszych ośrodków akademickich świata. Co jeszcze ciekawsze, stworzyli firmę neurotechnologiczną bez zbycia poza Polskę nawet jednego udziału w firmie, a jej siedziba cały czas znajduje się w Lublinie. Oddziały lubelskiej firmy naukowej znajdują się dzisiaj już w Australii, Nowej Zelandii, Korei Południowej, Indiach, Hong Kongu, Francji i Kanadzie. Polska firma staje się jedną z ważniejszych na świecie z obszaru neurotechnologii.

To prepare for Ax-2 our crew spent 5 days in the HERA habitat at @NASA_Johnson. The compact, self-contained environment simulates many of the living conditions one can expect on Space Station including confined spaces, controlled resources, and communication delays. It was a very helpful experience to get a feel of living together while following a timeline in such a unique environment.

A year ago, Axiom 2 crew joined us on the ISS. We had a great time with astronauts Peggy Whitson, John Shoffner, Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi, which also marked the 1st time 3 Arabs were in space together.
This was one of the most cherished memories of my mission.🤍
