From astronaut to refugee: how the Syrian spaceman fell to Earth
Tue 1 Mar 2016 08.00 CET
In 1987, Muhammed Faris became a national hero after going into space with the Soviets. Now living in exile in Turkey, he has a new mission – fighting for his fellow refugees
The Neil Armstrong of the Arab world has an office in a ramshackle building in Istanbul’s Fatih or “Little Syria”. Muhammed Faris is a refugee, just like the people milling outside, facing up to the hardest challenge in his life; one that has already seen the roles of fighter pilot, spaceman, military advisor to the Assad regime; protester, rebel and defector.
In Syria, Faris is a national hero, with a school, airport and roads named after him. Medals on the wall of his office honour his achievements as an astronaut (or, strictly speaking, a cosmonaut). Here, hundreds of miles from his birthplace, Aleppo, he campaigns for democratic change in Syria, “through words, not weapons”. (...)

With deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn to the honorable Syrian people the passing of General Mohammed Faris, the first Syrian astronaut and the second Arab astronaut.
His memory and scientific and national legacy will remain a beacon for following in his path.
Mohammed Faris, who refused to stand with the criminal Bashar al-Assad, stood by the free Syrian people and supported the revolutionary movement for change towards freedom.
Farewell Mohammed Faris, may God have mercy on you.
RIP 🙏

1st Syrian astronaut says ready to work with Turkey in space
by Issam Chehadat Mar 30, 2021 - 10:15 am GMT+3 Edited By Yasemin Nicola Sakay
(...) The stage of selecting astronauts will perhaps be one of the biggest challenges awaiting Turkey. Faris said this selection must be careful and detailed, and adhere to strict specifications. The astronaut said he was more than ready to provide the necessary support and advice to the Turkish Space Agency (TSA).
He continued, "I hope that I will have a role in choosing the Turkish astronaut and that the Turkish Space Agency will communicate with me in this regard."
"As you know, the president of the Turkish Red Crescent, Kerem Kınık, previously described me as the first Turkish astronaut, as I became a Turkish citizen, and I would be happy to stand with the first Turkish astronaut and share with them my experiences in this regard." (...)
