$10 Million Gift Endows Carnegie Mellon Deanship
June 18, 2019
Carnegie Mellon University Trustee and alumnus Lane Bess, and his wife, Letty, have made a $10 million gift to endow the dean's chair for the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The gift will allow Dean Richard Scheines and his successors to incentivize innovation around the college's strategic initiatives and emerging priorities across its nine departments and programs, and in its faculty and students. Carnegie Mellon will recognize this transformational commitment by establishing the Bess Family Dean's Chair of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Scheines, who was recently reappointed to a second five-year term, will be the first holder of the chair and will be installed in October. (...)

Cameron Bess, the child of venture capitalist and tech executive Lane Bess, will become the first out pansexual person to go into space this Saturday – just days after Pansexual Pride Day, which is today – on Blue Origin’s third flight into space.
“He grew up launching model rockets, and when I was a kid, he would do the same with me,” Cameron told the Canadian LGBTQ publication Xtra about their father. “When he was offered the opportunity to fulfill that dream with Blue Origin, he decided he wanted to bring me along. Shepard, Strahan take space flight on Blue Origin
Dec. 11, 2021 Updated: Dec. 11, 2021 10:15 a.m.
(...) Inside the spacecraft, occupants had time to admire the Earth before three drogue parachutes were deployed to slow and stabilize the capsule. These were followed by three main parachutes. Then, just before touchdown, a retro-thrust system expelled a cloud of air beneath the capsule.
After those inside the capsule landed back on Earth, they emerged to cheers and hugs, with people excitedly asking them about their experience. They were then presented with their astronaut wings.
Shepard Churchley has spent her life promoting what her father started when he became the first American in space and the fifth person to walk on the moon. She currently serves as chair of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees, a foundation that raises funds for college students and provides mentoring to scholars pursuing careers and research in STEM.
Strahan was born in Houston, spent most of his youth in Germany where his father was stationed in the U.S. Army and then returned to Houston for a portion of high school, where he played football at Westbury High School. He was recruited by Texas Southern University and then the NFL, where he played 15 seasons and became a Super Bowl champion. (...)

(...) Today’s flight lasted ten minutes and saw New Shepard reach a peak altitude of 347,231 feet (equivalent to 65.76 miles or 105.83 kilometers), whilst the Crew Capsule attained 347,580 feet (equivalent to 65.82 miles or 105.94 kilometers) at the top of its suborbital “arc”, before returning safely back to Earth.
“We had a great flight today. This was our sixth flight in what has been a great year for the New Shepard program. We flew 14 astronauts to space, flew a NASA payload flight that tested lunar landing sensors and completed our certification test flights,” said Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith. (...)
With today’s flight, NS-19 marked the first time since STS-134—shuttle Endeavour’s swansong mission in May 2011—that as many as six people had been launched beyond the Kármán Line on a single spacecraft. (...)
Shortly afterwards, NS4 and the Crew Capsule parted company and the booster began its descent back to Earth, announcing its arrival with a trademark sonic boom, then touching down smoothly on its landing pad at seven minutes and 25 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Crew Capsule continued to coast upwards to an apogee of 347,580 feet (equivalent to 65.82 miles or 105.94 kilometers). Taylor, Dick, Shepard Churchley, Strahan and the Besses logged roughly three to four minutes of weightlessness before heading back home. (...)
With today’s flight, 2021 closes out a banner year for Blue, with a personal-best-beating six launches. In addition to five missions by NS4—three of which carried human passengers—her sister New Shepard vehicle, NS3, executed the uncrewed NS-17 flight in August, whose payload included postcards, lunar landing technology and artwork.

I want to announce a set of gifts that I would ask all other commercial astronauts to consider. I call it buy one, give one, a term I first heard coined by my friends Ami Dror and Navyn Salem. It is simple, donate to worthy causes here on Earth the equivalent of the ticket price for the spaceflight. Commercial Astronauts are predicted to spend several hundred million dollars in the next five years. The impact that cohort could have here on Earth if they all supported this initiative could be very substantial.
