Program X-15 to eksperymentalny amerykański samolot kosmiczny zbudowany przez North American Aviation i obsługiwany przez United States Air Force i NASA.
W ramach programu wielu pilotów uzyskało skrzydła astronautów, także podczas przekraczania Linii Kármána.
30.11.1954 przedstawiono szczegółowe rozwiązania dla planowanego samolotu, a szczegóły techniczne dla silnika rakietowego 04.02.1955.
X-15 był wynoszony w powietrze pod skrzydłami samolotu-matki Boeinga B-52.
08.06.1959 odbył się pierwszy lot szybowcowy.
15.11.1960 odbył się pierwszy lot z wykorzystaniem silnika XLR-99.
24.10.1968 odbył się pierwszy lot X-15.
Wybudowano łącznie 3 egzemplarze X-15 (X-15A-1, X-15A-2, X-15A-3), które odbyły łącznie 199 lotów.
Pierwsza z maszyn znajduje się obecnie w National Air and Space Museum w Waszyngtonie, a druga w National Museum of the United States Air Force w Dayton w stanie Ohio.
Trzecia maszyna, X-15A-3 została zniszczona 15.11.1967 w katastrofie, gdy samolot, pilotowany przez Michaela J. Adamsa (https://tvn24.pl/magazyn-tvn24/siegnal-kosmosu-ale-nie-mial-szans-na-powrot-samolot-przestal-istniec,68,1438) wpadł w korkociąg i uległa rozpadowi.

On September 28, Major Allavie and RAF Squadron Leader Archer flew the NB-52B with the X-15-2 to Hidden Hills Lake. They launched Commander Forrest Petersen on mission 2-19-35. Petersen's highest speed was 3,600 miles per hour, slightly less than the speed that Joe Walker had achieved on the previous flight. Due to atmospheric conditions, Petersen reached a new record Mach number of 5.3. at a slightly lower maximum altitude of 101,800 feet.
The stability of the X-15 was marginal during the descent from high altitude. The problem became more acute as the X-15 achieved progressively higher altitudes. Engineers determined that the stability of the X-15 would be improved during that phase of the flight if the lower portion of the ventral fin were removed.

During one flight that reached an altitude of 266,000 feet, thus qualifying the pilot for astronaut wings, an electrical short caused the autopilot to shut off. While trying to fly the plane and simultaneously conduct experiments, Maj. Michael J. Adams was overtasked. He noticed the aircraft drift sideways and enter a spin, but managed to get it into a semicontrolled dive. Falling at 4,000 miles an hour, the X-15 began to oscillate, and then broke into pieces at 62,000 feet above the ground. Adams was unable to eject. Most of the wreckage landed on private property, north of Red Mountain. A memorial to the pilot was constructed on public land north of the site.

Fifty-two years ago this month, the No. 3 USAF/North American X-15 research aircraft broke-up during a steep dive from an apogee of 266,000 feet. The pilot, USAF Major Michael J. Adams, perished when his aircraft was ripped apart by aerodynamic forces as it passed through 65,000 feet at more than 2,500 mph.
The hypersonic X-15 was arguably the most productive X-Plane of all time. Between 1959 and 1968, a trio of X-15 aircraft were flown by a dozen pilots for a total of 199 official flight research missions. Along the way, the fabled X-15 established manned aircraft records for speed (4,534 mph; Mach 6.72) and altitude (354,200 feet).
The X-15 was a rocket, aircraft and spacecraft all rolled into one. Burning anhydrous ammonia and liquid oxygen, its XLR-99 rocket engine generated 57,000 lbs of sea level thrust. Reaction controls were required for flight in vacuum. Each flight also required careful management of aircraft energy state to ensure a successful, one attempt only, unpowered landing.
On Wednesday, 15 November 1967, the No. 3 X-15 (S/N 56-6672) made the 191st flight of the X-15 Program. In the cockpit was USAF Major Michael J. Adams making his 7th flight in the X-15. He had been flying the aircraft since October of 1966. Like all X-15 pilots, he was a skilled, accomplished test pilot used to dealing with the demands and high risk of flight research work.
X-15 Ship No. 3 was launched from its B-52B (S/N 52-0008) mothership over Nevada’s Delamar Dry Lake at 18:30 UTC. As the X-15 fell away from the launch aircraft at Mach 0.82 and 45,000 feet, Adams fired the XLR-99 and started uphill along a trajectory that was supposed to top-out around 250,000 feet. If all went well, Adams would land on Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base in California roughly 10 minutes later.
Around 85,000 on the way upstairs, Adams became distracted when an electrical disturbance from an onboard flight experiment adversely affected the X-15’s flight control system, flight computer and inertial reference system. As a result, data on several key cockpit displays became corrupted. Though with some difficulty, Adams pressed-on with the flight which peaked-out around 266,000 feet approximately three (3) minutes from launch.
As a result of degraded flight systems and perhaps disoriented by vertigo, Mike Adams soon discovered that his aircraft was veering from the intended heading. He indicated to the control room at Edwards that his steed was not controlling correctly. Passing through 230,000 feet, Adams cryptically radioed that he was in a Mach 5 spin. Mission control was stunned. There was nothing in the X-15 flight manual that even addressed such a possibility.
Incredibly, Mike Adams somehow managed to recover from his hypersonic spin as the X-15 passed through 118,000 feet. However, the aircraft was inverted and in a 45-degree dive at Mach 4.7. Still, Adams may very well have recovered from this precarious flight state but for the appearance of another flight system problem just as he recovered the X-15 from its horrific spin.
X-15 Ship No. 3 was configured with a Minneapolis-Honeywell adaptive flight control system (AFCS). Known as the MH-96, the AFCS was supposed to help the pilot control the X-15 during high performance flight. Unfortunately, the unit entered a limit-cycle oscillation just after spin recovery and failed to change gains as the dynamic pressure rapidly increased during Ship No. 3’s final descent. This anomaly saturated the X-15 flight control system and effectively overrode manual inputs from the pilot.
The limit-cycle oscillation drove the X-15’s pitch rate to intolerably-high values in the face of rapidly increasing dynamic pressure. Passing through 65,000 feet at better than 2,500 mph (Mach 3.9), Ship No. 3 came apart northeast of Johannesburg, California. The main wreckage impacted just northwest of Cuddeback Dry Lake. Mike Adams had made his final flight.
For his flight to 266,000 feet, USAF Major Michael J. Adams was posthumously awarded Astronaut Wings by the United States Air Force. His name was included on the roll of the Astronaut Memorial at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in 1991. Finally, on Saturday, 08 May 2004, a small memorial was erected to the memory of Major Adams near his X-15 crash site situated roughly 39 miles northeast of Edwards Air Force Base.

Once the first Mercury flights got underway, public attention shifted to the events at Cape Canaveral. This might, however, have ultimately worked to the program's benefit. A major contributor to the X-15's success over the long run was its emphasis on incremental development and its use in highly specialized scientific and technical research.42 As experience with many later space projects (including Apollo after Apollo 11, the shuttle, etc.) has shown, the general public tends to lose interest in such "routine" undertakings rather quickly. In short, it appears as though the X-15 got a needed boost of public fanfare at precisely the right point in its history —the later development and early flight test stage— and then became regarded as a low-key effort worthy of only occasional interest just as it was entering its less "flashy" research phase. These shifts in external perception probably could not have been planned any better.

McKay made another emergency landing on his 25th flight on May 6, 1966, when the X-15-1’s LR-99 engine shut down prematurely. The aircraft did not incur any damage and McKay suffered no injuries.

Later, on 6 May 1966, Jack McKay, flying X-15-1, was forced to make an emergency landing on Delmar Dry Lake caused by a broken propellant turbopump casing. Even though the landing was long and McKay ran a few hundred feet off the lake bed into the desert, the plane was undamaged and McKay took it to the air a month later.

The X-15-1 on the wing of the NB-52A. This photo may have been taken during the preparation for launch of mission 1-28-49 on May 22, 1962. Note the multi-probe pressure rakes mounted around the nose of the X-15. The probes measured the airspeed at several distances from the skin of the X-15 simultaneously. The air closest to the skin of the rocket plane (called the boundary layer) moves slower than the air farther away. A special X-15 silhouette, pointing to the left, was added to the scoreboard on the side of the NB-52A to commemorate the return flight from Eglin Air Force Base on May 5. Major Allavie and Captain John Campbell were at the controls of the NB-52A on the morning of May 22. Jack Russel managed the systems of the X-15 using the launch panel controls, observing the rocket plane on the twin television monitors that occupied the space between his station and the pilot's seats.
After Rushworth launched the X-15-2 over Hidden Hills Lake, he was immediately aware that its roll stability was not as good as expected. He had to constantly counteract its tendency to roll to the left through the entire flight. At an altitude of 96,000 feet, an overspeed of the turbopump of the XLR-99 triggered an early shut down of the engine after a burn of 75.3 seconds, when the X-15-1 was going mach 5.03 (3,450 miles per hour). It was still climbing and reached a peak altitude of 100,400 feet, over 10,000 feet higher than planned. Rushworth dropped the nose slightly to get it back on profile, then pitched the nose up and down in controlled increments to collect the desired boundary layer flow data.

The X-15A-2, modified from the number two aircraft and delivered to NASA in February 1964, included among other new features, a 28-in. fuselage extension to carry liquid hydrogen for a supersonic combustion ramjet that was flown (as a dummy) but never tested. It also had external tanks for liquid ammonia and liquid oxygen. These tanks provided roughly 60 seconds of additional engine burn and were used on the aircraft’s Mach 6.7 flight. While adding to the speed the X-15 did achieve, the tanks also increased the aircraft’s weight to almost 57,000 lb and added significantly to the drag experienced by the aircraft in flight.

The X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, built by North American Aviation (NAA), greatly expanded our knowledge of flight at speeds exceeding Mach 6 and altitudes above 250,000 feet. A joint project among NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy, the X-15’s first powered flight took place on Sept. 17, 1959, at the Flight Research Center, now the Armstrong Flight Research Center, at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) in California. NAA chief test pilot A. Scott Crossfield piloted this flight and other early test flights before NASA and the Air Force took ownership of the aircraft. Between 1959 and 1968, 12 pilots completed 199 missions and achieved ever higher speeds and altitudes, knowledge and experience that later influenced the development of future programs such as the space shuttle.

Rushworth next flew X-15 Ship No. 2 on Tuesday, 29 September 1964. He reached a maximum speed of 3,542 mph (Mach 5.2) at 97,800 feet. The nose gear door remained locked. However, while decelerating through Mach 4.5, Rushworth heard a bang that was less intense than the previous flight. This time, thermal stresses caused the nose gear door air scoop to deploy in flight. While the aircraft handled poorly, Rushworth managed to get it and himself back on the ground in one piece.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Sept. 29 (AP) —An X‐15 shot up to 98,000 feet today, testing a new electronic brain installed to control the rocket plane in flights into space with a star‐tracking telescope. Maj. Robert Rushworth of the Air Force hit a speed of 3,571 miles an hour on the checkout. The stellar camera, expected to get especially clear pictures of stars above the earth's atmosphere, was not aboard today, but is expected to be installed before the plane's next flight.

By mid 1961 the increasing altitudes of X-15 high altitude flights were requiring increasingly high angles of attack for recovery, and as the angles of attack increased the X-15s became more unstable laterally and directionally. To the point that even with the stability augmentation system at high gain, the planes were marginally controllable. Flight Research Center planner Richard Day and Air Force Flight Test Center planner Robert Hoey suspected that the negative dihedral effect caused by the large lower vertical stabilizer was the main contributor to the instability. A number of flight simulator runs convinced them even more, to the point that they convinced station senior managers that a high altitude flight should be made with the lower part of the ventral fin removed to test their theory. On 4 October 1961 USAF pilot Major Robert A. Rushworth made a flight with lower ventral removed - to Mach 4.3 and 78,000 feet. At low angles of attack the handling qualities were about the same as with the full ventral, but a angles above 8 degrees, lateral/directional stability was improved. This success prompted NASA to run a full set of wind tunnel, tests of the X-15 without lower ventral.
