Został wybrany przez NASA w grudniu 1994.
Podczas swojej pierwszej misji w 1998 odwiedził stację kosmiczną Mir.
Jego dwa loty kosmiczne trwały łącznie 24d 18h 08m 17s, przy czym ostatni lot został skrócony z powody rozpadu orbitera w czasie jego powrotu na Ziemię.

Anderson, who died Feb. 1, was buried in Arlington National Cemetery a few steps from the grave of Dick Scobee, the commander of the shuttle Challenger, which exploded 17 years earlier.
