On February 20, 1999 the Soyuz TM29 was launched with Haigneré and his crew to the MIR station for the Perseus mission. He performed a six-months mission with Viktor Afanasyev and Sergej Avdeyev. They left MIR uninhabited in a stand-by mode and landed in Kazakhstan on 28 August 1999.

Spaceflight experience 21-day French-Russian mission (called Altaïr) to the MIR Space Station (1 July – 22 July 1993).

On 20 February 1999, Haignere was the first non-Russian to be launched as Soyuz on-board engineer to the Russian MIR Space Station on a mission called "Perseus". The experimental programme comprised the continuation of former French experiments from "Cassiopée" and "Pegase" missions, and new experiments from France, Germany and ESA in the field of life science, physics and biology. During his flight, Haigneré also carried out a spacewalk (EVA) to perform biological and comet dust experiments outside MIR.

Haigneré also worked as on-board engineer for the MIR Space Station. "Perseus" was a long-duration flight of nearly 189 days. The landing took place on 28 August 1999. It is the longest flight ever performed by a non-Russian astronaut.

Current assignment Since 2 November 1999 he has been Head of the Astronaut Division at the European Astronaut Centre, Cologne.

The next 50 years of space - Polish children present their ideas

On the second day, Polish children and young students were invited to join a competition to present their ideas on the next 50 years of space exploration. Shannon Lucid, an American astronaut, and Jean-Pierre Haigneré, a European astronaut, awarded the winners with telescopes, ESA school atlases and other prizes. The children had many questions on the experience of living in space and how to become an astronaut. (...)

ESA astronaut, Jean-Pierre Haigneré onboard Mir
06/03/2001

On 20 February 1999, the French ESA astronaut Jean-Pierre Haigneré was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for the 6-month 'Perseus' mission aboard the Russian Mir space station.

The research programme was defined and coordinated by the French space agency CNES. Haignere is a former CNES astronaut; he joined the European astronaut corps of ESA in June 1998. For the Perseus mission, he was detached back to CNES. Together with Russian cosmonaut Viktor Afanassiev and the first Slovak cosmonaut, Ivan Bella, Haignere reached Mir on 22 February, expecting to remain aboard until August 1999.

It is the first time that a European astronaut has been qualified by the Russian Cosmonaut Training Centre as a Mir engineer. Most of the experiments performed by Haignere on behalf of French and many other European scientists built on work already done by other European astronauts on earlier missions to Mir. Two of the experiments were developed by ESA: the Bone Stiffness Measurement Device (BSMD) to study changes of the human bones in orbit, and the 'Mirsupio', a special bag designed by ESA's European Astronaut Centre (EAC) to facilitate the work of astronauts in space. Jean-Pierre Haigneré: A Cosmonaut's View of Progress. We Are Not Heroes; we are the Image of the Earth
February 20, 2017

Over the course of three decades after the initial space race, the world’s interest in space exploration gradually shifted from a competition-based approach to a collaborative mission. Experts from around the world started to cooperate to explore and challenge the unknown and push the boundaries of innovation beyond our scientific and technical limits to address fundamental questions about our present and future.

Last days of Mir
By Charles Seife 4 September 1999

What does Mir smell like? What does it sound like?

Mir to me sometimes smells like burnt coffee. The background noise is similar to the engine room of a boat or a noisy aeroplane. The numerous fans aboard the station are the primary source of this nuisance, which averages 67 decibels. I have completely forgotten what silence is like.

Is there anything on Earth like Mir?

No experience on Earth comes close to what it feels like to be in space. It’s a little like living in Captain Nemo’s submarine, where the portholes open onto a fantastic universe, all of which you experience with the very agreeable physical sensation that comes with weightlessness and travelling at 28 000 kilometres per hour round the world. #DYK? The first astronauts to observe an eclipse from space were NASA's Gemini 12 crew in 1966, but they were unsuccessful in getting photos. It was not until 33 years later that humans first saw the Moon's shadow on the planet below...
French astronaut Jean-Pierre Haigneré captured the first image of this phenomena from space, the last total #SolarEclipse of the 20th century, as the shadow moved over the UK and France in 1999.
