DER SPIEGEL: Each launch of the SLS costs several billion dollars. Additionally, you need another rocket to take a lander to the moon. That one is built by SpaceX, Elon Musk's private company, which has a reputation for making launches cheaper. Why not just use the SpaceX rocket, the Starship system, for the entire mission?

Nelson: There's only one rocket that's ready to launch: our SLS. And the Orion space capsule at its tip is also the only vehicle in which the crew can survive the return to Earth. At some point, Elon Musk would like to be able to do the same with his Starship. But we have to deal with the practical here and now.

2) NASA's Bill Nelson praises agency's people, accomplishments during last days as administrator
Rick Neale   Florida Today

NASA's Apollo 16 astronauts launched to the moon on April 16, 1972. Two days later on the Space Coast, an aspiring 29-year-old Melbourne attorney named Bill Nelson announced he would run for a Florida House seat in the upcoming Democratic primary.

"Today, I am announcing my candidacy in the hope that I may begin a life of public service in which I can give of myself with whatever ability God gave me," Nelson told supporters during that press conference — earning mention by TODAY, FLORIDA TODAY's predecessor publication.

Nelson would win that 1972 Florida House election, kicking off a marathon half-century career in the political limelight that took him from Brevard County to Tallahassee to Washington, D.C. — and into low-Earth orbit aboard space shuttle Columbia.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson also served as a U.S. Senator and was an astronaut.

Now, the past Melbourne High student body president and co-valedictorian is planning to step down Jan. 20 after serving nearly four years as NASA's administrator. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Polaris Dawn commander and astronaut Jared Isaacman — the 41-year-old billionaire founder and CEO of Shift4 — to serve as NASA's next administrator.

"My constitution is such that I'm not going to retire. And what I said is, I'm going to cloister myself and write a book. And then, we'll see what happens," Nelson, who is now 82, told reporters Wednesday during a roundtable discussion at the Kennedy Space Center Press Site.

Trump announced Isaacman's nomination on Dec. 4, and he awaits potential confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Nelson said he called Isaacman that day to offer congratulations, and he told him he'd love to see him at his convenience.

Nelson is NASA's 14th administrator, and he said each brought a different platform and plethora of experiences to the table. Isaacman does not have previous political experience. On Wednesday, Nelson told reporters he will tell Isaacman, "you need to be mindful that the budget is only proposed by the executive branch."

"The budget is enacted by the Congress. And that means a lot of nuances," Nelson said.

To that end, Nelson said he just learned $180 million in emergency supplemental appropriations to develop the International Space Station deorbit vehicle — which is intended to bring down the orbiting outpost after 2030 for safe splashdown in the South Pacific Ocean — had been cut at the insistence of House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Another piece of advice for Isaacman: "Be prepared to lead 24-7-365. And what you never expect, will happen."

Nelson praises NASA's people, programs

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson speaks to members of the media about the space agency and his experiences throughout the years during a Wednesday roundtable discussion at the Kennedy Space Center Press Site. NASA/Kim Shiflett

President Joe Biden appointed Nelson to serve as NASA administrator in March 2021, and he was sworn in two months later.

Nelson said "we've had an incredible run" during his tenure, citing the James Webb Space Telescope and the regular cadence of astronaut and cargo launches to and from the ISS. He also expressed optimism that the NASA-Lockheed Martin needle-nosed X-59 supersonic aircraft will soon make its maiden flight, without generating loud sonic booms.

During a NASA press conference two weeks ago, Nelson announced the Artemis II moon mission — which will transport four astronauts around the moon — has been postponed again to an April 2026 target launch. Chief reason: Engineers continue probing the unexpected charring of the Orion capsule's heat shield, which occurred during the November 2022 uncrewed Artemis I mission, among other issues.

In tandem, NASA is also postponing Artemis III, which will land astronauts on the moon's rocky surface, until mid-2027.

Asked about Artemis II on Wednesday, Nelson called the April 2026 target date "very realistic," and the massive rocket may launch earlier. He said that launch will not occur until NASA is ready, and "safety is our North Star."

Nelson praised his "fantastic" team at the space agency. Showing reporters his blue NASA jacket, he pointed out a mission patch bearing images of the moon and Mars alongside three names: Nelson, former deputy administrator Pam Melroy, and former associate administrator Bob Cabana.

"She had that patch made because we operate as a crew," Nelson said.

Shuttle Columbia STS-61C flight in 1986

U.S. Rep. Bill Nelson, payload specialist on the STS 61-C mission, prepares to enjoy a freshly peeled grapefruit on the middeck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia in January 1986.  NASA

Nelson served in the Florida House from 1972 to 1978, the U.S House of Representatives from 1979 to 1991, and the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2019.

"In Congress, Nelson was considered the congressional leader for our nation’s space program, a strong advocate to combat climate change, and a proponent for career training and education programs in science and technology to create more good-paying American jobs," his NASA biography says.

Nelson trained and launched into orbit with the crew of the space shuttle Columbia in January 1986 on the six-day STS-61C mission. Serving as a payload specialist, he conducted 12 medical experiments, including "the first American stress test in space on a treadmill" and a University of Alabama effort to grow crystal proteins for cancer research, NASA reported.

During his Wednesday remarks, Nelson recalled writing his college thesis on how Cape Kennedy would impact Brevard County politics. And he described how the Columbia mission represented a personal circle. While elevated up on the crew access tower at pad 39A before boarding the spacecraft, he looked to the northwest where his grandparents had homesteaded a plot of land in 1913 near today's shuttle landing runway on north Merritt Island.

"So when I think of legacy, it's kind of in my DNA," he said.

Nelson concerned about NASA layoffs and other changes
by Jeff Foust March 31, 2025

(...) “I have to say that the first person that was fired at NASA” in a round of layoffs announced March 10, he said, “was the chief scientist and chief climate officer, and so I think we need to be concerned about that.” (...)

“Now I take the long view,” he said. “I think compared to other agencies, NASA is not getting it nearly as bad.” (...)

Nelson also said he was unaware of any proposal that Elon Musk made to bring Williams and Wilmore back earlier. The SpaceX chief executive, also a closer adviser to President Trump, has stated several times that he proposed to the Biden administration an earlier return for the two astronauts only to be rejected. Musk, though, has not provided any details about that proposal or who in the White House rejected it.

“The White House, if they had been contacted, they would have contacted me,” Nelson said. “None of that occurred.”

Outgoing NASA leader Bill Nelson weighs in on Elon Musk and SpaceX, defends plans for moon rocket
By William Harwood December 18, 2024 / 2:26 PM EST / CBS News

Nelson said a different rocket might be used in the 2030s, but the SLS is the only choice available for moon flights through the end of the current decade.

"Understand, that there is currently one human-rated rocket that has been to the moon and back, and that is SLS," Nelson said.

He’s been to space, ran NASA and can do 40 pushups at IHOP. Here’s why Bill Nelson thinks Musk must rethink his Mars plan
Julia Musto in New York Tuesday 14 October 2025 15:11 BST

The former NASA astronaut and the agency’s 14th administrator says it’s not a matter of if we go to the Red Planet — but when

Biden-era NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is a RINO. No, not the derisive term used by President Donald Trump and MAGA world for Republicans who disagree with them — Nelson is retired in name only.

And this still-busy-at-83, one-time spaceman has a lot to say.

For one, the former three-term senator from Florida is adamant that humans are going to Mars. It’s not a matter of if, just a matter of when, he told The Independent Sunday in an exclusive interview at the non-profit Washington West Film Festival in Reston, Virginia.

But he’s seeking a clearer vision of that mission to Mars from the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, who provides the rockets that launch to the International Space Station, and which will ultimately send astronauts to the moon and Mars using his 403-foot-tall SpaceX Starship — assuming it stops exploding in test flights, the latest of which, on Monday went well.

Musk has called the moon a “distraction” on the way to the Red Planet. But, Nelson says the billionaire X social media platform owner “has contradicted himself.” “Because he’s said the opposite, also,” the former astronaut said.

Nelson says you can’t have Mars without the moon. Scientists need the research from the first phases of the Artemis program to get us to Mars.

“But the fact that he has a contract to do this lunar lander — he can’t land on Mars if he doesn’t have a lander. And so, he’s going to try to develop that lander and what he learns on a lunar lander will help him with the Mars lander,” he added.

Crunching M&Ms from the LOOK Dine-in Cinemas following the 30th anniversary screening of Apollo 13 — naturally — Nelson said he gets along very well with Musk and his billionaire competitor and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.

The future of space exploration is increasingly commercial, according to Nelson. That’s especially true when the International Space Station comes down in 2030 after 32 years in space.

It will be cheaper for NASA to rely on the work funded by SpaceX, Blue Origin and other players, and NASA plans to lease space on a commercially-built station in the future.

“You're getting the advantages of a different way of doing things that often does not take as much time if the government is directing the contractor what to do,” he explained.

Of course, the bad comes with the good. Astronomers have voiced concerns about a dangerous situation building in low-Earth orbit as SpaceX, AST SpaceMobile and others launch more and bigger satellites which astronomers warn could block out the stars and potential near-Earth threats.

Nelson says we’ll have more groundbreaking telescopes launched that will solve that problem and that we can mitigate any risk.

However, at least one of those projects has been canceled under the Trump administration, which cut NASA’s science operations in half, the Miami native said.

The revolutionary Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was lost in the budget slash, with human spaceflight prioritized above astronomy, climate and other science.

NASA has also felt the weight of recent layoffs, as have many in critical fields around the currently shut down federal government. And further cuts are expected this week.

Nelson called the situation “tragic,” telling The Independent that we’re working against ourselves.

“I can point [to] two areas real quick in the federal government, other than the CDC, that it's so counterproductive to cut. One is NASA, the other is NIH” the Army captain said. “I mean, we're on the major breakthroughs in taking care of each other through our health. And they're cutting that research. I mean, it's just so counterproductive.”

Nelson said he hopes that Congress will restore some of what has been lost at NASA and pointed out that the world has endured extreme times before.

“We'll get through this,” he said, as pop singer Meghan Trainor’s “NO” blasted over the theater’s speakers.

Much younger in appearance and vigor than his 83 years, Nelson, a soon-to-be two-time author, remains an optimist. During his tenure as NASA administrator, the Columbia Space Shuttle STS-61C payload specialist oversaw some awe-inspiring science.

The James Webb Space Telescope launched in December 2021, providing the ability to peer through time back to the start of the universe. About a year later, NASA successfully conducted the first test of the Orion spacecraft that will take astronauts to lunar orbit on Boeing’s Space Launch System rocket.

Now, he believes NASA can do it again with Artemis and the agency’s Moon to Mars plan. Although, an advisory committee recently warned of Starship delays and the U.S. appears to be neck and neck with – or maybe already behind – China.

Like the Webb Telescope, Artemis is also decades in the making. It’s the progression of the Apollo program, a hallmark of early NASA that started first in 1962 and lasted through 1972.

The festival’s screening of Apollo 13 served as a reminder of what can be accomplished at NASA, Jason Slattery, the film festival’s Director of Sponsor Relations, explained. Mainly, it’s served as a unifying force.

“And that’s exactly what those astronauts displayed during all of these Apollo missions over the years,” he noted.

Nelson agreed, saying that humanity’s nature of exploration will always be there.

“We are going to Mars,” said Nelson. “Unless we blow ourselves up as a planet.”

Until then, you can find him at your local IHOP doing push-ups with a 24-year-old Army Ranger.

Nelson said he had previously chided former Stanford University tight end New Jersey Sen. Corey Booker for not doing his the right way in his office.

”I said, ‘Corey, you do 100 push-ups?’ Let's get down on the office rug and show me,’” he recalled. “So he gets down there and starts doing them like this … I said, ‘Corey, that's not a push-up. You got to go all the way down. That's a military push up.’”

“Anyway, yesterday I got down — I could not go past 40,” joked Nelson.
