In 1504, during his fourth voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus and his crew were stranded in Jamaica. Facing hostility from the local population and running out of supplies, Columbus used his knowledge of an upcoming lunar eclipse (not solar, but related in terms of celestial events) to convince the locals that his gods were angry and would make the moon appear "inflamed with wrath." The eclipse occurred as predicted, and the frightened inhabitants agreed to continue providing provisions to the crew.
