1998 ukończył studia na Uniwersytecie Tokijskim, uzyskując tytuł inżyniera w dziedzinie lotnictwa i inżynierii kosmicznej.

Studiował na tym samym wydziale i kursie razem z Takashim Uchiyamą, przyszłym finalistą piątego naboru JAXA.

1998 rozpoczął pracę dla All Nippon Airways (ANA).
Pracował w dziale śledzenia pasażerów na międzynarodowym lotnisku Tokio Haneda.

Ukończył dwuletnie wstępne szkolenie lotnicze w Bakersfield w Kalifornii oraz roczną szkołę zaawansowanego szkolenia lotniczego w Tokio.

10.2003 rozpoczął pracę jako drugi pilot samolotu Boeing 767.

01.04.2009 dołączył do korpusu astronautów JAXA i rozpoczął podstawowe szkolenie w Tsukuba Space Center, które ukończył w 07.2009.

08.2009 rozpoczął ogólne szkolenie kosmiczne w Johnson Space Center w 20. grupie astronautów NASA.

25.07.2011 po ukończeniu ogólnego szkolenia kosmicznego, uzyskał kwalifikacje do lotu na ISS.

15.09.2011 ogłoszono, że zostanie włączony do załogi NEEMO 15 (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations), podczas którego przeprowadzony zostanie załogowy test w podwodnym laboratorium Aquarius, zlokalizowanym na głębokości 19 metrów i w odległości 5,6 km od wybrzeża Key Largo na Florydzie.
Miał zostać przetestowany lot na planetoidę.

17.10.2011 rozpoczęła się wyprawa NEEMO 15, która trwała 13 dni.

11.2013 został powołany na członka załogi ISS 48/49, której wystrzelenie na statku kosmicznym Sojuz zaplanowano na 05./06.2016.

17.12.2014 roku rozpoczął szkolenie w CPK.

16.12.2014 na posiedzeniu Międzyresortowej Komisji ds. selekcji kosmonautów i powołania ich do załóg załogowych statków kosmicznych i stacji, podjęto decyzję o powołanie go do załogi rezerwowej Ekspedycji-46/47 i załogi głównej  Ekspedycji 48/49.

23.11.2015 na posiedzeniu Komisji Międzyresortowej został zatwierdzony jako inżynier pokładowy załogi rezerwowej statku kosmicznego Sojuz TMA-19M.

06.07.2016 na posiedzeniu Państwowej Komisji ds. Testów Lotów Załogowych Kompleksów Kosmicznych na kosmodromie Bajkonur został zatwierdzony jako inżynier pokładowy głównej załogi statku kosmicznego Sojuz MS-01.

14.11.2023 JAXA ogłosiła włączenie astronauty do załogi głównej Ekspedycji, która ma się rozpocząć w 2025.

01.08.2024 w komunikacie prasowym NASA nr 24-099 ogłoszono jego powołanie na specjalistę misji nr 1 w załodze statku kosmicznego Crew Dragon Crew-10, którego start zaplanowano na 02.2025.

17.12.2024 NASA na blogu poinformowała o przesunięciu startu na koniec 03.2025 z powodu opóźnień w gotowości do lotu nowego Crew Dragon.

Dowódczyni załogi Anne Charlotte McClain doprecyzowała datę startu na 25.03.2025 w poście na X, który potem usunęła.

Japanese astronaut @Astro_Onishi is set to serve as commander of the International Space Station, becoming the third Japanese national to helm the ISS.
JAXA astronauts Koichi Wakata, 61 and Akihiko Hoshide, 55, commanded the ISS in 2014 and 2021, respectively.

Today was my last day as flight director before launch.
Work has also started again at Tsukuba, and experiments on Kibo will resume in earnest from today!
During this shift, we started checking out the solid combustion experimental equipment.
After the shift, my coworkers sent me off with a nice surprise 🥺

Today is haircut day 💇‍♂️
Nicole ( @Astro_Ayers gave me a haircut.
They vacuumed it up, used clippers, and finished it off carefully with scissors.
I was asked, "What should I do with my sideburns?" with a different level of attention to detail than when I went to Barber Anatoly last time 🤣
It's refreshing and makes shampooing easier.

Today I spent the whole day collecting data for NASA's Thigh Cuff research.
It is being researched as a countermeasure to a spaceflight-specific adverse eye effect called SANS, which is caused by fluid shifts.
It was difficult to spend such a long time with the base of my thighs compressed, but thanks to Nicole's support we were able to successfully collect the data.

Even at 400 km above the ground, the altitude of the ISS gradually decreases if left alone.
Therefore, it is necessary to periodically fire the engines to increase speed and raise the altitude, a process called a reboost.
In the video, during the reboost, the ISS is accelerating toward the right. So, what happens to an object that is stationary in the air?
