Amazing #OTD pics from space: The first picture of Earth taken from the surface of another planet. @MarsRovers Spirit captured Earth in a pre-dawn scan of the Martian sky on the 63rd (martian) day of its mission, March 8, 2004.

In the MRO image, which was taken on Jan. 29, Spirit's lander platform appears as a bright feature at the bottom left, southwest of Bonneville Crater.

MRO's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera has recorded color images of the Spirit rover itself before, but all previous photos of the lander platform were in black and white, according to NASA officials.

The search for water: picking landing sites for NASA’s Mars rovers
by Henry Bortman Monday, April 7, 2003

(...)
Meridiani Planum: hematite, water, and life

On contemporary maps of Mars, Meridiani Planum is in dead center. What makes it an exciting spot is that it is the site of a vast deposit of gray hematite. Hematite is iron oxide. It comes in two forms: red and gray. The red kind you’re probably familiar with. It’s rust, and it’s everywhere on Mars. It forms readily whenever iron is exposed to air. It gives the planet its red color.

Gray hematite has a dark gray metallic luster. You’ve probably seen it in curio shops and jewelry stores. Unlike red hematite, gray hematite usually forms over long periods of time, in the presence of liquid water, often standing bodies of liquid water.

Gray hematite has been found on Mars in only three places, Meridiani Planum being one of them. The other two locations, Aram Chaos and Valles Marineris, although even more interesting than Meridiani Planum in some respects, are too hazardous for a MER spacecraft to land in. (...)

NASA goes back to the future with Mars rover plans
NASA NEWS RELEASE
Posted: July 27, 2000

In 2003, NASA plans to launch a relative of the now-famous 1997 Mars Pathfinder rover. Using drop, bounce, and roll technology, this larger cousin is expected to reach the surface of the Red Planet in January, 2004 and begin the longest journey of scientific exploration ever undertaken across the surface of that alien world.

Początkowo planowano jeden łazik a później misja rozrosła się do dwóch roverów  8)

We are evaluating the implications of a two-rover option, Weiler added. "I intend to make a decision in the next few weeks so that, if the decision is to proceed with two rovers, we can meet the development schedule for a 2003 launch."

After launch on top a Delta 2 rocket, and a cruise of seven and a half months, the spacecraft should enter the Martian atmosphere January 20, 2004. In a landing similar to that of the Pathfinder spacecraft, a parachute will deploy to slow the spacecraft down, and airbags will inflate to cushion the landing. Upon reaching the surface the spacecraft will bounce about a dozen times and could roll as far as a half-mile (about one kilometer). When it comes to a stop, the airbags will deflate and retract, and the petals will open, bringing the lander to an upright position and revealing the rover.

heliocentryczną wiodącą ku Marsowi sondę MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover-A) z pojazdem typu Athena o nazwie Spirit.
