2005 rozpoczął kierowanie działaniami związanymi ze zdolnością do lotu statków powietrznych, a także testowanie samolotów w 23. eskadrze testów w locie Salty Dogs w amerykańskiej bazie lotniczej Marynarki Wojennej Patuxent River.

Testował samoloty F/A-18С Hornet, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F/A-18G Growler oraz brał udział w certyfikacji systemów precyzyjnego lądowania na pokładach lotniskowców.
 
06.2015 odbył kurs zarządzania przedsiębiorstwem na Uniwersytecie Wirginii.

2016 otrzymał nominację na kapitana Marynarki Wojennej USA.

07.09.2016 na posiedzeniu Komisji Międzyresortowej wstępnie ustalono, że znajdzie się w załodze Sojuza MS-07 w 11.2017.
 
22.10.2016 na forum magazynu „Cosmonautics News” pojawił się komunikat, że w załodze statku kosmicznego Sojuz MS-07 będą znajdować się Aleksander Skworcow, Scott Tingle i Norishige Kanai.

23.01.2018 podczas U.S. EVA 47 brał udział w naprawie Canadarm2, wymieniając uszkodzone efektory zatrzaskowe - LEE) na ramieniu B manipulatora . Usunięto uchwyt LEE nr 201 i zainstalowano uchwyt LEE nr 204.

09.12.2020 na posiedzeniu amerykańskiej Narodowej Rady Kosmicznej ogłoszono, że został włączony do grupy astronautów przygotowujących się do załogowych wypraw na Księżyc w ramach programu Artemis.
 
Na Twitterze Erica Bergera pojawiła się wiadomość zawierająca link do wewnętrznego rozkładu lotów NASA, który informował, że Scott Tingle ma być dowódcę Starlinera w jego pierwszym locie operacyjnym (Starliner 1), który może nastąpić dopiero w 08.2023.
 
30.09.2022 w komunikacie prasowym NASA nr 22-103 potwierdzono nominację Scotta Tingle'a na dowódcę Starlinera.
 
Tingle ma ponad 4500 godzin lotu na 51 typach samolotów, wykonał około 750 lądowań na pokładzie lotniskowca.

Astronaut and Darden Alum Scott Tingle Reflects on Six Months in Space

Despite the grandeur and oddity of the surroundings, Tingle said one develops a routine in space, rising at 6 a.m. to eat breakfast before a morning meeting to discuss any unusual situations that may have developed overnight. Then, Tingle said he would begin to work on his tasks for the day, interspersed with an hour for lunch and dedicated time for a cardio workout and weightlifting. The days concluded with dinner and the occasional movie before turning in to try to get six to eight hours of sleep before doing it again.

Tingle said the experience afforded him the opportunity to constantly practice and hone his leadership skills. (...)

U.S. Navy Captain Scott Tingle was selected as a NASA astronaut in July 2009 and spent 168 days on @Space_Station
as a flight engineer of Expedition 54/55.
In 2018, he ventured outside the ISS for a spacewalk and swapped out a robotic hand on the Canadarm2.

Tingle is a highly decorated @USNavy test pilot with more than 4,500 flight hours on 55 types of aircraft.
He flew an F/A-18 Super Hornet aboard the USS Carl Vinson, which responded to 9/11.

Scott Tingle named NASA's new chief astronaut, succeeds Joe Acaba

November 4, 2025 — NASA has named its 19th chief astronaut.

Scott Tingle, who spent 166 days on the International Space Station in 2018 and was next to command the first operational flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft until that mission ran into delays, is succeeding Joe Acaba as the head of NASA's astronaut office.

Tingle's appointment was noted in an email to employees at the Johnson Space Center by center director Vanessa Wyche. Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown there was no press release or statement released, as is typical when a new chief is chosen.

Acaba, who held the position since February 2023, is joining Wyche's staff to provide "technical advisement for mission and strategy" at Johnson. Under this new role, he will also support "the agency's STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] workforce goals... [and] will advance the center's collaboration with commercial space, academia, and other government agencies as we explore beyond Earth orbit," wrote Wyche. (...)

NASA named astronaut Scott Tingle as chief of the Astronaut Office at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, effective Nov. 10. A decorated spaceflight veteran and former captain in the United States Navy, Tingle has logged more than 4,500 flight hours in 51 different aircraft and served as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station.

As chief astronaut, Tingle is responsible for managing astronaut resources and operations. He also will help develop astronaut flight crew operations and make crew assignments for future human spaceflight missions, including Artemis missions to the Moon.

“Our Johnson Space Center team extends heartfelt congratulations to Scott on his appointment as chief of the Astronaut Office. We wish him every success as he steps into this dynamic and inspiring leadership position,” said Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche. “I also offer my deepest gratitude to Joe Acaba for his devoted leadership of the Astronaut Office. He accomplished the remarkable work of readying our astronaut corps for bold missions to and from the International Space Station and channeling their expertise to shape and evaluate the technologies, software, and procedures that will make future spaceflight safer and more achievable for our nation’s explorers.”

A native of Randolph, Massachusetts, Tingle was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2009. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Tingle most recently served as a flight engineer aboard the space station, spending more than six months in orbit during Expedition 54/55. He was the flight engineer and United States Operational Segment lead for the mission, which launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard a Soyuz spacecraft on Dec. 17, 2017, and concluded with landing on June 3, 2018. Since returning to Earth, he has supported the Astronaut Office in various roles, including mission support, technical leadership, and crew readiness activities.

Before coming to NASA, Tingle worked for The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California, where he served as a technical staff member supporting the company’s propulsion department. He was commissioned as a naval officer in 1991 and went on to complete a distinguished career, earning the rank of captain before retiring. Follow Tingle on X.

Acaba has transitioned to the center director’s staff, where he provides technical advice on mission planning and strategy at NASA Johnson. In this new role, he leads the center’s alignment with NASA’s strategic plan and human spaceflight priorities, supports the agency’s STEM workforce goals, and advances collaboration with commercial space, academia, and other government partners as NASA continues its exploration beyond low Earth orbit.
