O3b mPOWER to druga generacja satelitów należącej do firmy SES konstelacji O3b, której celem jest dostarczanie klientom usług komunikacji głosowej oraz transmisji danych. Na orbicie znajduje się także 20 satelitów pierwszej generacji. Jedenaście nowych satelitów ma sprawić, że przepustowość całej konstelacji wzrośnie do terabita na sekundę.

Pojazdy zostały zbudowane przez firmę Boeing z wykorzystaniem elektroniki stosowanej w platformie satelitanej 702, lecz są przystosowane do działania w unikalnym środowisku średniej orbity okołoziemskiej (MEO), a ich napęd jest w pełni elektryczny.

Satelity o numerach 3 i 4, które zostaną wyniesione podczas tego lotu, mają docelowo trafić na na orbitę równikową (o inklinacji 0°) 7825 kilometrów nad powierzchnią Ziemi.

Dwa nowe O3b
  28.04. o 22:12 z Cape Canaveral wystrzelona została RN Falcon-9R. Wyniosła ona na orbitę satelity telekomunikacyjne O3b mPower 3 i O3b mPower 4. Pierwszy stopień RN (B1078.2) w T+8' 26" wylądował na barce ASDS JRTI na Atlantyku.

SpaceX launches Falcon 9 rocket with two O3b internet satellites

The O3b mPOWER satellites that lifted off on the Falcon 9 rocket from pad 40 will beam high-speed internet services around the world, providing “fiber-like” connectivity to users between 50 degrees north and south latitude, according to SES, the Luxembourg-based operator that owns the O3b fleet. Airplanes, cruise ships, energy companies, research institutions, and remote communities can remain connected using the O3b network.

The second pair of O3b mPOWER satellites will join the first two satellites launched in December 2022, which have arrived at their target medium earth orbit (MEO) and are currently undergoing in-orbit check out. Comprising an initial constellation of 11 high-throughput satellites built by Boeing, the O3b mPOWER ecosystem is easily scalable and requires just six MEO satellites to provide high performance connectivity services around the globe.
