Dla wahadłowca był to drugi lot orbitalny.
Był to także pierwszy lot Jerry'ego Lynna Rossa oraz trzeci i ostatni lot Charlesa Davida Walkera.
Wahadłowiec wyniósł trzy satelity telekomunikacyjne: MORELOS-B (Meksyk), AUSSAT-2 (Australia) i SATCOM KU-2 (RCA Americom).

Demonstracja montażu konstrukcji rozkładanych w kosmosie: 
EASE (Experimental Assembly of Structures in Extravehicular Activity),
ACCESS (Assembly Concept for Construction of Erectable Space Structure).

As one of the mission goals of STS-61B, launched 40 years ago today, the crew tested methods of building structures in space. In this photo, Jerry Ross—on his first of a whopping 7 shuttle missions—builds the ACCESS structure while secured to the shuttle's Canadarm.
