An Astronaut’s View on the Moon Landing
by Francis Storrs July 19, 2019

Frederick Hauck, A62, talks about watching Neil Armstrong, his own three journeys in space, and his hope for a future mission to Mars

Ever since he was a young man, Frederick H. “Rick” Hauck, A62, H07, was fascinated by space exploration. In May of 1961, when Alan Shepard became the first American astronaut to reach space, Hauck was just finishing up his junior year at Tufts—he’ll never forget listening to every word of the radio broadcast in Miller Hall. He wondered if he could ever do something like that.

From Navy to NASA: an astronaut's life. For his family, it's meant more time spent at home
By Keith Henderson Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor March 7, 1985

A job as a space shuttle astronaut something of a breather? From the family's point of view, that's not far from the truth, according to Dolly Hauck, wife of shuttle pilot and commander Frederick Hauck. ``Actually, we looked on going to NASA as a chance to have Rick at home more than he would have been had he stayed in the Navy,'' she says.

Post The Heron House
The Heron House 16 godz. ·
Today our Heron House Family remembers and celebrates the remarkable life of Captain Rick Hauck, a man whose courage carried him through every chapter of life, from commanding missions in space to bravely facing Parkinson’s disease for more than fifteen years.

Rick was a NASA astronaut, naval officer, physicist, husband, and father, but to those of us who had the honor of knowing him here at The Heron House, he was something even more profound: a man of quiet strength and dignity.
Throughout his career, Rick served his country and humanity with distinction. A graduate of Tufts University and MIT, he went on to serve as a Navy pilot, test pilot, and later as a Space Shuttle commander, logging over 5,500 flight hours, including 436 in space. He led missions aboard Challenger and Discovery, and his leadership after the Challenger tragedy helped pave the way for NASA’s return to flight. His career was decorated with the Navy’s Outstanding Test Pilot Award, NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal, and induction into the Astronaut Hall of Fame, among countless other honors.

But beyond the accolades and adventure, Rick’s life was defined by integrity, curiosity, and quiet resilience. Even as Parkinson’s took its toll, his spirit never dimmed. He faced each day with courage and a gentle steadiness that inspired everyone around him. There was a warmth in his presence, a reminder that greatness is not only measured by achievements, but by how one carries themselves through life’s hardest moments.

Today, the NASA family mourns the passing of Frederick “Rick” Hauck, a decorated naval aviator and three-time space shuttle veteran.

He was known as a man of character and bravery, proven time and time again during his time at the agency. My heart goes out to his family, and everyone in the community who knew and loved him.

Hauck came to NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1978. He’d go on to pilot space shuttle mission STS-7, flying alongside legends like Sally Ride and Bob Crippen as part of the shuttle’s first five-person crew. He commanded the STS-51A mission, space shuttle Discovery’s second mission, and STS-26, the first shuttle flight after the Challenger accident. NASA thanks him for his service to human spaceflight and the shuttle program, as well as his service to this country.

‘Roger, Go’: Remembering the Shuttle’s Return to Flight, 30 Years Ago
by Ben Evans 7 years ago

Thirty years ago, at 11:38 a.m. EDT on 29 September 1988, America returned to space with humans for the first time in the 32 months since Challenger. Photo Credit: NASA

As America prepares for another “return to flight” next year—carrying astronauts to low-Earth orbit aboard Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon—a moment of reflection should occur this weekend, as 30 years pass since the return to flight of the Space Shuttle Program (SSP) in the wake of the Challenger tragedy. Thirty-two months after seven astronauts were lost in the skies above Cape Canaveral, a crew of five rocketed into orbit at 11:38 a.m. EDT for a four-day flight which re-established the shuttle’s credentials, evaluated new hardware for the first time and passed a major hurdle in enabling the more complex missions which would follow.
