Low’s career was central to America’s lunar ambitions, reforming engineering processes in the aftermath of the Apollo 1 tragedy, and laying the groundwork for the Space Shuttle. ‘He was good at everything’, recalled the first director of NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, Robert Gilruth who thought that Low was ‘worth about 10 men’. Speaking half a century after the first crewed spacecraft orbited the Moon, Apollo 8 commander Frank Borman said: ‘As usual, with any great endeavour, it always boils down to a single human being who makes a difference.
