Wybitna weteranka U.S. Navy.

Honoring Veterans: Navy Veteran Kathryn Hire
March 15, 2024

(...) Hire’s service began in the U.S. Navy when she was commissioned as a Naval Officer in 1981; in 1982, she earned her Naval Flight Officer Wings. Over her career, she accumulated 3,400 hours in flight, some of which include her three year experience in teaching student Naval Flight Officers. Hire’s naval career also included worldwide airborne oceanographic research missions where she flew to 25 different countries.

Notably, Hire was the first woman in the U.S. military to be assigned to a combat aircrew when she served as part of Atlantic and Caribbean operations aboard the P-3 maritime patrol aircraft in May 1993. Prior to that, in January 1989, Hire left active duty and joined the Naval Reserve as a Naval Reserve officer. In the same year, she started a new career as an engineer at the Kennedy Space Center. Endeavour’s crew takes on ‘bittersweet’ mission

(...) Kay Hire used to launch space shuttles. Now she flies in them.

The 50-year-old Navy Reserve captain is making her second spaceflight — and her first in 12 years.

She grew up in Mobile, Ala., the daughter of a land surveyor. She’d use her father’s surveying equipment to look at craters on the moon. “I was just totally fascinated” with space, she said.

Hire was commissioned as a Naval officer in 1981 and, 12 years later, became the first woman in the U.S. military to be assigned to a combat air crew. She took part in Atlantic and Caribbean patrol operations.

She began working at Kennedy Space Center in 1989 as an engineer and became an astronaut in 1995. She rocketed into orbit in 1998, then was recalled to active naval duty.

Hire will help operate the shuttle robot arm and raise the window shutters of the new space station lookout, once it’s in the proper place. The domed observation deck will offer panoramic views of Earth and outer space.

“Honestly, I’m not really hung up on being the first one” to look out the windows, she said, “just so long as I get a view at some point.” (...)

An Important First: Joining the Combat Aircrew

Next, something incredible happened. While Captain Hire has had many groundbreaking moments in her career, one that stands out is May 13, 1993. On that date, she reported to Patrol Squadron Sixty-Two (VP-62) and was assigned combat aircrew. She served as part of Atlantic and Caribbean operations aboard the P-3 maritime patrol aircraft.

After some time serving Navy Reserve duty with various units based in Florida, Louisiana and Texas, Captain Hire was recalled to active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom as a member of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command staff after September 11th. (...)

Then came another breakthrough. In March 1995, Captain Hire reported to the Johnson Space Center for training as a member of Astronaut Group 15, becoming the first astronaut selected from the Kennedy Space Center workforce. (...)

In 2010, Captain Hire went to space with Space Shuttle Endeavour for STS-130 from February 8–21, 2010. The mission this time? Space Shuttle Endeavour was on the 32nd mission to assemble the International Space Station. Hire and the crew delivered and outfitted Node 3, also known as Tranquility, as well as the Cupola, a seven-windowed portal for the space station. (...)

The Amazing Life of Captain Kay Hire
By Chelsea Adams -October 6, 2016

(...) Just before entering high school, Hire came across an article about the first women starting naval flight training in Pensacola. “I was just like, wow!” she reminisces with a chuckle. “And it wasn’t so much, ‘Wow, these women are breaking barriers!’ It was more like, ‘That’s really interesting. I’d be interested in doing that.’”

She explored her options for college with that job in the back of her mind. While interviewing for an ROTC scholarship, her interviewer asked if she’d applied to the U.S. Naval Academy. “To be honest, I’d never heard of the Academy at that point, so I had to answer, ‘What’s that?’” Hire admits with a laugh. She applied and received an appointment in 1977, just one year after the prestigious institution began accepting women. So, she packed her bags and traveled from Mobile Bay to Annapolis, Maryland. From there, she trained as a naval flight officer — just like those women in Pensacola who had sparked her fascination — and flew oceanographic research covering 25 countries on a P-3 Orion Aircraft for three years. In 1993, she became the first female assigned to a combat aircrew. Eventually transitioning from active to reserve duty, she returned to her alma mater, the U.S. Naval Academy, as an instructor in 2014. (...)
