On March 16, 1966, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott launched for the Gemini VIII mission—the first spaceflight for both men. Meant to be a three-day mission, the flight was cut short less than 11 hours after launch after a serious malfunction during the first ever docking in space.
