1985-1985 studiował na University of South Australia, gdzie uzyskał tytuł licencjata w zakresie nauczania, a następnie tytuł magistra w zakresie edukacji plenerowej.

Był dyrektorem ds. edukacji na świeżym powietrzu w kampusie Timbertop w Geelong High School.

Po karierze w edukacji na świeżym powietrzu rozpoczął karierę zawodowego podróżnika, zjeżdżając na nartach na oba bieguny – przez Grenlandię i lądolód Patagonii, po czym spróbował swoich sił jako przewodnik polarny.

1991 autor książki Icetrek. The Bitter Journey to the South Pole

1996-1997 pełnił funkcję oficera szkolenia terenowego w bazie Mawson Australijskiego Oddziału Antarktycznego.

1999 został założycielem i dyrektorem Icetrek Expeditions and Equipment, firmy zajmującej się organizacją i przeprowadzaniem wypraw polarnych, a także produkcją sprzętu do wypraw narciarskich w ekstremalnie zimnych warunkach.

2002 wynalazł wiązania narciarskie Flexi Ski Bindings, które po wprowadzeniu na rynek w 2004 stały się powszechnie stosowane podczas wypraw polarnych.

2004 rozpoczął pracę jako przewodnik na Arktyce i Antarktydzie.

2008-2009 był kierownikiem projektu Międzynarodowego Roku Polarnego AGAP North.

2009 opłynął Grenlandię na pokładzie lodołamacza należącego do Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise w ramach ekspedycji Climate Impacts.

Został pierwszym Australijczykiem, który razem z Jonem Muir'em na nartach zdobył zarówno biegun północny, jak i biegun południowy.

2012 był współzałożycielem IPGA (International Polar Guides Association).

2020 był współautorem PECS (Polar Expedition Classification Schem).
Opracowano alternatywne i wysoce wydajne metody podróżowania w regionach polarnych oraz wprowadzono wykorzystanie specjalistycznych tworzyw sztucznych w produkcji sprzętu polarnego.

12.08.2024 SpaceX ogłosiło start prywatnej załogowej misji Fram2 na orbitę polarną, która ma się odbyć do końca 2024 i potrwać od 3 do 5 dni.
Pilotem misji został Eric Phillips, ale później przeniesiono go na stanowisko specjalisty misji i lekarza.

02.2024 rozpoczął szkolenie do lotu.

08.2024 rozpoczął szkolenie na symulatorze Crew Dragon.

04.04.2025 po raz pierwszy załogowy statek kosmiczny od czasu Apollo ASTP/AS-210 wodował na Oceanie Spokojnym, a nie na Atlantyku.

Australian explorer Eric Philips to join Fram2 mission on SpaceX flight over Earth's polar regions

Mr Philips runs an adventure company that takes clients on ski expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic.

Two years ago, during an expedition in the Arctic, one of his clients started chatting about space travel.

"We talked about what it would be like to fly to the Moon and to Mars," Mr Philips said.

"And apparently, I started singing, 'Fly Me to the Moon'.

"I think that's what captured his attention for me in particularly."

The client was Chun Wang, a wealthy Maltese cryptocurrency entrepreneur.

A year after that conversation, Mr Philips received a text message from Mr Wang.

"The text was words to the effect of, 'I'm continuing the idea of this mission into space, and I'm looking for a polar explorer'.

"And sort of jokingly, I think I sent him a 'hands up' emoji, and said, 'Well, look, you know, I'm interested'.

"Little did I know that I would be the chosen one." (...)

Aussie polar explorer set to make history - in space

Who better to enjoy the privilege than a man who's spent so many decades trudging through that very ice?
"Exactly how the antarctic and the arctic look to human eye, will be something revelatory I think," Philips said. (...)

The crew will attempt to grow mushrooms in a process that, if successful, could be a great option to feed astronauts in the future.
Space has been a dream for Philips ever since he watched the moon landing as a seven-year-old.

Malta-based investor Chun Wang is financing the mission, which was dubbed Fram2 after a Norwegian ship that carried key expeditions to the North and South poles around the turn of the 20th century. (...)
