Chyba niestety już nie. Możliwe, że podczas tej burzy NASA na oficjalnie zakończy misję łazika Opportunity...

Ze Spiritem próbowali się skontaktować przez 1 rok i 2 miesiące po ostatnim połączeniu komunikacyjnym (22.03.2010 - 24.05.2011), więc teoretycznie mogą jeszcze próbować. Pytanie tylko czy jest sens. Moim zdaniem nie ma.

Ta burza pyłowa to raczej w tym przypadku zjawisko lokalne? Pytam w kontekście misji InSight i potencjalnemu zagrożeniu, które przecież już położyło na deski Opportunity.

Kolejna burza pyłowa w pobliżu Opportunity

(...) W drugim tygodniu stycznia NASA poinformowała, że obserwuje powstawanie nowej burzy pyłowej. W tej chwili dystans pomiędzy miejscem przebywania Opportunity a “zalążkiem” nowej burzy to około 200 km. Burza będzie obserwowana w kolejnych tygodniach, jednak jest prawdopodobny kolejny spadek ilości światła docierającego do paneli łazika. Wartość tau ma przekroczyć 1,5.

Niezła wizualizacja, naprawdę szkoda Opportunity. To był kawał doskonałej maszynki, której nie zabiła wada techniczna czy zmęczenie materiału ale zwykła, marsjańska natura....

NASA's Opportunity Rover Logs 15 Years on Mars

NASA's Opportunity rover begins its 16th year on the surface of Mars today. The rover landed in a region of the Red Planet called Meridiani Planum on Jan. 24, 2004, sending its first signal back to Earth from the surface at 9:05 p.m. PST (Jan. 25, 2004, at 12:05 a.m. EST). The golf-cart-sized rover was designed to travel 1,100 yards (1,006 meters) and operate on the Red Planet for 90 Martian days (sols). It has traveled over 28 miles (45 kilometers) and logged its 5,000th Martian day (or sol) back in February of 2018.

"Fifteen years on the surface of Mars is testament not only to a magnificent machine of exploration but the dedicated and talented team behind it that has allowed us to expand our discovery space of the Red Planet," said John Callas, project manager for Opportunity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "However, this anniversary cannot help but be a little bittersweet as at present we don't know the rover's status. We are doing everything in our power to communicate with Opportunity, but as time goes on, the probability of a successful contact with the rover continues to diminish."

Opportunity's last communication with Earth was received June 10, 2018, as a planet-wide dust storm blanketed the solar-powered rover's location on the western rim of Perseverance Valley, eventually blocking out so much sunlight that the rover could no longer charge its batteries. Although the storm eventually abated and the skies over Perseverance cleared, the rover has not communicated with Earth since then. However, Opportunity's mission continues, in a phase where mission engineers at JPL are sending commands to as well as listening for signals from the rover. If engineers hear from the rover, they could attempt a recovery. (...)

After a review of the progress of the listening campaign, NASA will continue its current strategy for attempting to make contact with the Opportunity rover for the foreseeable future. Winds could increase in the next few months at Opportunity's location on Mars, resulting in dust being blown off the rover's solar panels. The agency will reassess the situation in the January 2019 time frame.

Wiele wskazuje , że marne są szanse na odzyskanie kontaktu. Podjęte dodatkowe działania zakładają wystąpienie bardzo mało prawdopodobnych scenariuszy w dysfunkcjach łazika.
Teraz już bardziej można wyczekiwać  na oficjalne zakończenie misji.

NASA making renewed efforts to contact Mars rover Opportunity

WASHINGTON — NASA is making a new, and perhaps final, attempt to restore contact with the Mars rover Opportunity, which has not communicated with the Earth for more than six months. (...)

The new commands address scenarios where the rover’s primary X-band radio has failed or both the primary and backup X-band radios have failed, as well as cases where Opportunity’s internal clock has an offset affecting its timing. The commands direct the rover to switch to the backup X-band radio or use its UHF transmitter to contact Earth, as well as resetting its clock.

Those scenarios could explain why the rover has failed to contact Earth, but project officials acknowledge that those scenarios are unlikely. “A series of unlikely events would need to have transpired for any one of these faults to occur,” JPL noted in the statement about the new campaign. (...)

Efforts to restore contact continued during the five-week partial government shutdown that ended Jan. 25. With the shutdown now over, some in the planetary science community expect that, if the new effort is not immediately successful, NASA could decide to end efforts to contact the rover by mid-February. NASA is currently funded only through Feb. 15 and runs the risk of another shutdown if a budget deal isn’t reached by then, which would delay a decision by NASA Headquarters on the rover’s future. Callas, in a separate statement about the anniversary, noted the “bittersweet” nature of the milestone given the lack of communications with the rover. “We are doing everything in our power to communicate with Opportunity,” he said, “but as time goes on, the probability of a successful contact with the rover continues to diminish.”

Doprawdy nie wiem czego się spodziewali panowie z JPL... Kontakt utracony przeszło pół roku temu a my czytamy o jakiś minimalnych oczekiwaniach. Taki scenariusz chyba można by było zakładać jeszcze w sierpniu.... ale teraz?
