Chyba najładniejsza panorama lądowiska Vikibga 1 jaką dotychczas widziałem:

Eko, naprawdę nie widzisz podobieństwa do lądowiska Pathfinder'a? Sporo głazów, kamieni, generalnie pełen urodzaj odłamków skalnych, identycznie było na Ares Vallis i wtedy nawet obawiałem się czy kurdupel Sojourner da radę jeździć w tym środowisku/otoczeniu. Można jednak powiedzieć z perspektywy czasu, że to chyba właśnie nieduży rozmiar rover'a pozwolił mu zgrabnie lawirować wśród tych skałek.

A mnie zainteresował kolor nieba na panoramach. Wszystko zależy oczywiście od pory dnia, przejrzystości (zapylenia) atmosfery itd, ale pamiętam, że w przypadku Pathfindera przy niektórych panoramach kombinowali i wycinali naturalne niebo, wstawiając w jego miejsce gradient. Czy tutaj też takie coś mogło mieć miejsce? I ewentualnie w jakim celu? Może parametry ekspozycji zdjęć "przepalały" niebo, więc kombinowali z gradientem?

03.09.1976 o 19:39:59 UTC lądownik Viking 2 oddzielił się od orbitera.
W momencie separacji lądownik krążył po orbicie z prędkością ok. 4 km/s.

Viking 2 touched down on the surface of Mars #OTD in 1976, about 4,000 miles (ca. 6,460 kilometers) from Viking 1. Viking 1 and Viking 2 returned 52,663 images of Mars and mapped about 97% of the planet’s surface.

IN SOME SENSE, VIKING 2 HAD ALREADY LOST OUT ON THE HISTORY-MAKING when it touched down at Utopia Planitia on Mars at 3:38 p.m. Pacific time on September 3, 1976. The robotic probe’s sister vehicle, Viking 1, had already made the first soft landing on Mars in July and taken the first photographs from the Red Planet’s surface.

Viking 1 Lander najprawdopodobniej wylądował w miejscu pradawnego megatsunami powstałego po upadku 3 km planetoidy/komety w Oceanus Borealis 3,4 miliarda lat temu.

When NASA's Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars nearly 50 years ago, its cameras imaged a boulder-strewn surface of elusive origin. New research led by Planetary Science Institute Senior Scientist Alexis Rodriguez shows the landing site may be on the margins of a megatsunami deposit, formed when a 3-kilometer asteroid impacted a northern Martian ocean about 3.4 billion years ago.

"The lander was designed to seek evidence of extant life on the Martian surface, so to select a suitable landing site, the engineers and scientists at the time faced the arduous task of using some of the planet's earliest acquired images, accompanied by Earth-based radar probing of the planet's surface," said Rodriguez, lead author of "Evidence of an oceanic impact and megatsunami sedimentation in Chryse Planitia, Mars" that appears in Nature Scientific Reports. PSI Senior Scientists Jeffrey Kargel and Daniel Berman are co-authors of the paper.
