Polska zakupuje WFIRST od NASA

W prognozowanym upadku gospodarki USA, a w konsekwencji również NASA otwiera się rynek dla kosmicznych graczy, którzy do tej pory zajmowali niszową pozycję.

Obecnie widoczne na tle innych krajów wysoko rozwiniętych sukcesy rządu RP z walce z pandemią  koronawirusa zdają się  w silniejszej pozycji stawiać polski program kosmiczny, który wobec trudności Arianespace w ekonomicznym utrzymaniu portu kosmicznego w Gujanie Francuskiej, wykazuje aspiracje w wybudowaniu kosmodromu w Ustce nad Bałtykiem. Kolejne etapy rozwojowe polskich rakiet kosmicznych Bursztyn i Bigos są realną alternatywą  wobec podupadających programów kosmicznych NASA i ESA. Również w obliczu katastrofalnego poziomu pandemii koronowirusa w USA eksperci z branży kosmicznej wieszczą rychły upadek firmy Elona Muska.

Zatem niewielkie są perspektywy wyniesienia z Florydy teleskopu WFIRST. Jeśli  Polska zrobiła pierwszy krok w pozyskaniu na wyprzedaży  zaawansowanego teleskopu, to ambicją polskiego programu kosmicznego powinno być jego wyniesienie w kosmos rakietą wyprodukowaną przez polski przemysł rakietowy. Pojawiły się nawet propozycje na nazwy indywidualne dla przyszłej polskiej rakiety kosmicznej: Lech Kaczyński i Krzysztof Penderecki.

Tylko teraz pytanie. Kiedy polski przemysł kosmiczny prześcignie SPACE-X o NASA nie wspominając? Pierwszy statek na Marsa będzie się nazywał Twardowski

NASA is naming its next-generation space telescope currently under development, the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), in honor of Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, who paved the way for space telescopes focused on the broader universe.

The newly named Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope – or Roman Space Telescope, for short – is set to launch in the mid-2020s. It will investigate long-standing astronomical mysteries, such as the force behind the universe’s expansion, and search for distant planets beyond our solar system. 

Considered the “mother” of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which launched 30 years ago, Roman tirelessly advocated for new tools that would allow scientists to study the broader universe from space. She left behind a tremendous legacy in the scientific community when she died in 2018.

“It is because of Nancy Grace Roman’s leadership and vision that NASA became a pioneer in astrophysics and launched Hubble, the world’s most powerful and productive space telescope,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “I can think of no better name for WFIRST, which will be the successor to NASA’s Hubble and Webb Telescopes.”

Former Sen. Barbara Mikulski, who worked with NASA on the Hubble and WFIRST space telescopes, said, "It is fitting that as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, NASA has announced the name of their new WFIRST telescope in honor of Dr. Nancy Roman, the Mother of Hubble – well deserved. It recognizes the incredible achievements of women in science and moves us even closer to no more hidden figures and no more hidden galaxies." (...)

Hubble turned out to be the most scientifically revolutionary space telescope of all time. Ed Weiler, Hubble’s chief scientist until 1998, called Roman “the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope.”

“Nancy Grace Roman was a leader and advocate whose dedication contributed to NASA seriously pursuing the field of astrophysics and taking it to new heights,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for science. “Her name deserves a place in the heavens she studied and opened for so many.” (...)

Zespół instrumentu koronografu kosmicznego teleskopu Nancy Grace Roman rozpocząć montaż, integrację i testowanie. Zespół spędził lata na projektowaniu, konstruowaniu i budowie komponentów koronografu. Zademonstruje on nowe technologie, które pozwolą nam badać słabe planety wokół pobliskich gwiazd.

Agencja planuje zakończenie jego budowy w 2024 roku, ale teleskop przejdzie jeszcze testy i ostatecznie będzie gotowe do lotu w maju 2027 roku. Zostanie umieszczony w punkcie libracyjnym L2, 1,5 miliona kilometrów od Ziemi, a NASA pisze o całkowitych kosztach 4,3 miliarda dolarów. Tory Bruno pisał, że ULA nie będzie nawet próbować konkurować o kontrakt ze SpaceX, wiec prawdopodobnie to będzie kolejna ważna misja, która wystrzeli Falcon Heavy.

Zgodnie z przewidywaniami kontrakt na wystrzelenie teleskopu wygrał SpaceX, a firma użyje do tego Falcona Heavy. Cena jest jednak dość wysoka, NASA pisze o kosztach wynoszących 255mln

Tymczasem budowa busa, który dostarczy teleskop do miejsca przeznaczenia i umożliwi jego działanie, została właśnie ukończona po latach budowy, instalacji i testów.

Bus jest także wyposażony w wiele funkcji, pozwalających realizować NGRST cele naukowe podczas trwania misji.

Kolejnym etapem będzie integracja pozostałych głównych elementów obserwatorium, w tym instrumentów naukowych i samego teleskopu.

07.11.2024 po testach próżniowych Optical Telescope Assembly został dostarczony do clean room w NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center w Greenbelt w stanie Maryland, gdzie jest prowadzona integracja teleskopu.

Udana integracja rozkładanej osłony przypominającej osłonę przeciwsłoneczną, która pomoże zapobiec przedostawaniu się niepożądanego światła do teleskopu — z zewnętrzną obudową, która jest kolejną konstrukcją zaprojektowaną w celu ochrony teleskopu przed światłem rozproszonym, a także utrzymywania go w stabilnej temperaturze.

Przetestowano rozłożenie osłony przeciwsłonecznej.

„Ponieważ osłona przeciwsłoneczna została zaprojektowana do rozłożenia w kosmosie, system nie jest wystarczająco wytrzymały, aby rozłożyć się w grawitacji Ziemi”, więc użyto gravity negation system.

He cited an audit of the mission performed by NASA’s Office of Inspector General and published in July. “Although critical system integration, testing, and associated tasks remain, as of March 2024, Roman was meeting its cost obligations and schedule to launch by May 2027,” that audit concluded, although it noted past issues linked to the pandemic that caused an increase in lifecycle costs and a seven-month delay to its launch readiness date in 2021.
