Between spaceflights, NASA astronauts support other astronaut missions; we call it a ground job. After my first mission, Kent Rominger, the Chief of the Astronaut Office, asked me what I would like to do as a ground job. I told him I'd really like to be a Commander on my next flight so I wanted to do whatever job he thought would prove I was ready. I also told him that if he thought I was ready to be a Commander, I'd take a cake job in EVA. He made me the Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office which turned out to be a a challenging and rewarding role with broad responsibilities ranging from international coordination with our Russian partners to supporting Soyuz crew landings in Kazakhstan.
