NASA Astronaut, Crewmates Safely Return to Earth from Space Station
RELEASE 18-047  June 3, 2018

After 168 days of living and working in low-Earth orbit, three members of the International Space Station Expedition 55 crew - NASA astronaut Scott Tingle, cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos and astronaut Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency - return to Earth Sunday, June 3, 2018, landing at 8:39 a.m. EDT (6:39 p.m. in Kazakhstan) southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. Three members of the International Space Station Expedition 55 crew, including NASA astronaut Scott Tingle, returned to Earth Sunday after 168 days of living and working in low-Earth orbit.

Tingle, astronaut Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos landed at 8:39 a.m. EDT (6:39 p.m. in Kazakhstan) southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan.

This mission was the first for Tingle and Kanai, and Shkaplerov now has logged 532 days in space on three flights. The crew completed hundreds of experiments, including materials testing, a study of the effect of microgravity on the bone marrow and research into plant growth in space.

They also welcomed four cargo spacecraft delivering several tons of supplies and experiments. A SpaceX Dragon spacecraft arrived at the station in December, followed by another Dragon in April and Orbital ATK’s Cygnus resupply spacecraft in May. A Russian Progress cargo craft arrived at the station in February.

Tingle and Kanai ventured outside the station on separate spacewalks to perform work on parts of the Canadarm2 robotic arm. They also participated in dozens of educational events as part of NASA’s Year of Education on Station.

Shkaplerov conducted a record-setting spacewalk in February with fellow cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin to replace an electronics box for a communications antenna on the Zvezda service module. The spacewalk timed out at 8 hours and 13 minutes – the longest in Russian space program history.

The Expedition 56 crew – Commander Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold of NASA, and Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos – will operate the station and prepare for the arrival of three new crew members on Friday, June 8. Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA, Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency), and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos are scheduled to launch Wednesday, June 6, from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. NASA Television will broadcast the launch and docking to the space station.

Soyuz MS-07 returns station crew to Earth after 168 days in space

June 3, 2018 — A Russian spacecraft carrying three crew members home from a five month stay on the International Space Station returned to Earth on Sunday (June 3).

Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, Norishige "Neemo" Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and astronaut Scott "Maker" Tingle of NASA touched down aboard Russia's Soyuz MS-07 spacecraft on the steppe of Kazakhstan. Descending under a parachute, the gumdrop-shape capsule was further slowed by braking thrusters and landed southeast of the town of Dzhezkazgan at 8:39 a.m. EDT (1239 GMT or 6:39 p.m. local Kazakh time).

"That was a good ride!" exclaimed Tingle as he descended toward the ground.

The spacecraft was met on the ground by a recovery team led by Russian forces and joined by NASA and Japanese medical personnel to assist Shkaplerov, Kanai and Tingle as they began their readjustment to gravity.

The crew seemed to be in good health and spirits, smiling, and in Shkaplerov's case, enjoying a bowl of fresh grapes.

"First of all, feeling well," said Shkaplerov after the landing. "We're feeling a bit tired. At the same time, we're proud to have accomplished it and we are glad to be back on Earth. We are glad that the weather is beautiful, it is sunny. And the landing was 'soft.'"

The trio began their journey home about three hours prior to their landing with the undocking of their Soyuz from the space station's Rassvet mini research module at 5:16 a.m. EDT (0916 GMT). The departure marked the official end of Expedition 55, the station's 55th contingent since 2000.

"It's been three months since we started Expedition 55 and I took command," said Shkaplerov during a brief change of command ceremony in orbit on Friday (June 1). "We have been working hard."

Astronauts Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold with NASA and cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos, who arrived at the space station on March 23 and served as members of the Expedition 55 crew under Shkaplerov's command, are still aboard the outpost.

Feustel, who took over command of the space station from Shkaplerov, presented the departing crew members with a token of their time together on orbit.

"I offer you an Expedition 56 coin that the three of us have signed and saved for you as a parting gift," Feustel said.

Three more members of the Expedition 56 crew — Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Alexander Gerst and Serena Auñón-Chancellor with NASA — are scheduled to launch to the space station on Wednesday (June 6) and arrive two days later.

Shkaplerov's, Kanai's and Tingle's landing concludes their 168 days in space together since they launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Dec. 17. During their time in orbit, the Expedition 54/55 crew participated in and helped conduct hundreds of science investigations.

Shkaplerov also performed an extravehicular activity (EVA, or spacewalk), the second of his career, venturing outside with Expedition 54 commander Alexander Misurkin to help reconfigure communications systems and retrieve science experiments on the Russian side of the space station. At 8 hours and 13 minutes, the spacewalk set a new record for the longest Russian EVA in history.

He now has three space missions to his record, including a prior 165-day stay on board the space station in 2012 and a 200-day expedition in 2015. Shkaplerov has now logged a total of 533 days, 5 hours and 31 minutes off the planet, ranking him 16th worldwide for time spent in space.

Shkaplerov returned to Earth with a soccer ball to be used in the opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place in Russia from June 14 through July 15.

"An official Telstar 18 ball was especially brought to the station for this purpose and the ball planned to be returned to Earth together with my crew," Shkaplerov tweeted a day before the landing.

Tingle and Kanai also conducted one EVA each, both with Expedition 54 crewmate Mark Vande Hei, to replace and stow a latching end effector, or hand, from the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

This was Tingle's and Kanai's first flight into space. Kanai is Japan's 11th astronaut to fly in space since 1992. Tingle is the seventh member (out of nine) of NASA's 20th group of astronauts to fly since their selection in 2009.

Now back on Earth, the three Soyuz MS-07 crewmates will return to their respective agencies after a brief stopover in the Kazakh town of Karaganda. Shkaplerov will be flown to Star City, outside of Moscow; Tingle and Kanai will return on a NASA jet to Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Soyuz MS-07 was the 53rd Soyuz to fly to the International Space Station. It traveled a total of 71.2 million miles (115 million kilometers) over the course of 2,688 orbits of Earth.

Comments by JAXA President
on Return of the Soyuz spacecraft (53S / MS-07) with Astronaut Norishige Kanai aboard

I am very pleased that Astronaut Kanai, who completed a long stay at the International Space Station (ISS), returned safely to the Republic of Kazakhstan by the Soyuz spacecraft (53S/MS-07) today.

Astronaut Kanai has steadily carried out numerous missions under the mission theme “Clues to health and longevity are in space" by exploiting his background as a doctor. Especially, in a space experiment to study the structure and mechanism of amyloid fibril, which is known as one of factors of the onset of Alzheimer-type dementia and diabetes, the condition of forming amyloid fibrils was successfully discovered, paving the way to elucidate the mechanism of extension of fibrils. Furthermore, on-orbit rearing and analyzing technologies of gene knockout mouse and wide type mouse were established. Based on these technologies, the possibility of comparatively analyzing muscle and bone tissue changes at the gene level expands and it is expected to be a clue to drug discovery.

In February, Astronaut Kanai was in charge of the maintenance work related to the ISS's robotic arm by extravehicular activities, which was performed as the 4th Japanese astronaut after Astronauts Doi, Noguchi, and Hoshide. In April, he captured the U.S. Dragon cargo spacecraft with the robotic arm, contributing to the steady operation of ISS.
In addition, Astronaut Kanai released Kenya's first CubeSat, which was the first cooperation partner under the KiboCUBE programme between the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and JAXA, and participated in the 2nd International Space Exploration Forum jointly with the U.S. and Russian astronauts as well as with the Russian astronaut at the Japan-Russia summit Meeting. Through the ISS long-term stay of Astronaut Kanai, he has informed the world that the ISS project is a successful example of international cooperation and collaboration and that Japan is indispensable among them.

After returning, I hope the Astronaut Kanai to pass the experiences gained during his stay with along the Astronauts Noguchi and Hoshide who will experience a long-term stay from 2019 to 2020, and to reflect the experience in expanding the use of facilities in low earth orbit such as the ISS and “Kibo” as well as technical development and international cooperation of international space exploration such as lunar exploration.

We would like to express our gratitude to everyone, including people of Japan who supported us; domestic affiliated organizations, NASA, ROSCOSMOS, and other foreign affiliated organizations for the support of the Astronaut Kanai in this mission.

Comment by Soichi Noguchi

Congratulations on your success in the long stay to the International Space Station, Astronaut Kanai!

Astronaut Kanai made remarkable achievements in fibril growth experiment for elucidating the mechanism of amyloid fibrils and techniques of "rearing on gene knockout mouse in orbit" as his mission theme of "Clues to health and longevity are in space." We are also very proud of his achievements.

In addition, the Astronaut Kanai's skills as astronauts were also unquestionably demonstrated in the activities such as extravehicular activity, which was performed as the 4th Japanese astronaut, and the release of microsatellite that became the first CubeSat under the KiboCUBE programme with the United Nations. I believe that his international evaluation as an astronaut would be enhanced.

First of all after the return, I'd like Astronaut Kanai to spend his time relaxing with his family and trying to rehabilitate. Then, please tell everyone in Japan what you gained during your stay. I am looking forward to seeing you in Houston.

Comment by Akihiko Hoshide

I am very pleased with the successful return of Astronaut Kanai and his successful long-duration stay mission.

During the 54th/55th Expedition Mission to the International Space Station (ISS), Astronaut Kanai carried out important works related to ISS operation such as extravehicular activities involved in the maintenance of the ISS's robotic arm and capturing of the Dragon cargo spacecraft by maneuvering the ISS's robotic arm in addition to a variety of experiments such as fibril growth experiment aimed at elucidating the causes of Alzheimer's disease, rearing of small animals in orbit in order to investigate stress in space such as microgravity in detail, and releasing of the Kenya's first microsatellite.

I participated in the mission to support for mission operation, plan adjustment and others at NASA Johnson Space Center. His reliable work was highly appreciated among persons involved.

I also gained inspiration from the Astronaut Kanai's great success. I'd like to have Astronaut Kanai enjoy the Earth that he was out for a long time, and I am also hoping for his success after the return such as sharing of his knowledge and experience at ISS for future space exploration.
