In the future, the Federal Government would like to transfer less money to the European Space Agency Esa. As can be seen from an application by the grand coalition, the government bill plans to reduce the German budget for Esa: in 2020 and 2021 it should amount to 855 million euros and 2022 and 2023 respectively 850 million euros - currently it is 927 million euros. In addition, resources for the national space program should increase slightly to € 297.2 million per year in 2020 and then be frozen, most recently at € 285 million.
Almost three weeks before the Council of Ministers of the Esa, which is about the budget until 2023, the industry association BDI is beating alarm. "With the cuts, Germany would say goodbye as a leading space nation and send a devastating signal to its European partners," said BDI space expert Matthias Wachter. The national space budget, which also finances the German Aerospace Center, also shows a fall in funds adjusted for inflation.
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier had in October at the Space Congress of the BDI appealed for the support of the Industry : "Without space and services we would be less successful as an economy". If the motion were to be passed on Thursday in the Bundestag, this would hit German industry, says Wachter. The BDI then sees Esa projects such as participation in the Artemis Moon Mission of NASA or a German-French robotic moon mission in danger. The further development of the new European launcher Ariane 6 with German participation is in principle called into question. The coalition demands that it be "scrutinized due to unclear market developments". Well possible that the rocket will be developed in future only in France and Italy.
