Pozostaje jedynym europejskim astronautą, który ma długotrwałe loty kosmiczne odbyte na pokładzie 2. stacji orbitalnych.
Oznacza to także, że jest jednym z 6. astronautów tej kategorii, którzy mają ponad 300 dni nalotu, z czego 3. spędziło  podczas 2. lotów orbitalnych ponad rok w kosmosie.

12.1982 Thomas Reiter ukończył Akademię Wojskową w Neubibergu.
Uzyskał tytuł magistra inżyniera w dziedzinie technologii kosmicznej.

12.1992 ukończył Imperial Test Pilot School w Boscombe Down w Wielkiej Brytanii.

Jego nalot wynosi ponad 2300 godzin na 15 typach samolotów bojowych.

07.05.1993 wraz ze Szwedem Christerem Fuglesangiem został przydzielony w ramach rosyjsko-europejskiego programu Euromir 95 do odbycia szkolenia.

08.1997-03.1999 (na mocy porozumienia pomiędzy ESA a Bundeswehrą) dowodził grupą zadaniową Niemieckich Sił Powietrznych.

04.2005 została podpisana umowa pomiędzy Roskosmosem a ESA na długoterminowy lot Thomasa Reitera do ISS kosztem rosyjskiego członka załogi.
Zgodnie z planami Reiter miał współpracować na stacji z Ekspedycjami 11. i 12.
W tym samym czasie miał wystartować w ramach misji STS-121 (09.2005), a powrócić na Ziemię wraz z załogą STS-116 (03.2006).
18.08.2005 lot przełożono na lato 2006.
W związku z tym na orbicie musiał pracować w ramach 13. Ekspedycji.

04.07.2006-22.12.2006 trwała misja Astrolab, pierwsza długoterminowy lot ESA na ISS.

08.2007 został mianowany członkiem zarządu DLR (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt).

03.2009 otrzymał nominację na generała brygady niemieckich sił powietrznych.

17.03.2011 został mianowany dyrektorem ds. załogowych lotów kosmicznych i operacji Europejskiej Agencji Kosmicznej na 4-letnią kadencję.
Do jego obowiązków należy udział ESA w projekcie ISS, programy załogowe i kontrola naziemna europejskich astronautów.

Zu seinem 60. Geburtstag wurde in Neu-Isenburg eine Straße nach dem Ex-ESA-Astronauten Thomas Arthur Reiter benannt. Er ist dort aufgewachsen und Ehrenbürger der Stadt.

Thomas Reiter besuchte zwei Raumstationen

Insgesamt 179 Tage, etwa ein halbes Jahr, dauerte diese Mission. Kein Deutscher war bis dahin länger im All. Danach musste Thomas Reiter allerdings mehr als zehn Jahre auf seinen zweiten Einsatz warten. Als Teil der Expedition 13/14 flog er im Juli 2006 zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS und stellte damit wieder einen Rekord auf: Kein deutscher Astronaut vor oder nach ihm besuchte zwei verschiedene Raumstationen.

In der ISS hat jeder seine eigene Kajüte. Das Essen ist vielfältiger und der Alltag etwas komfortabler, erinnert sich Reiter, auf der Mir-Station war es damals noch wesentlich rudimentärer:

„Es war wesentlich beengter, die wissenschaftlichen Anlagen waren natürlich bei weitem noch nicht so gut ausgestattet, wie das heute an Bord der Internationalen Raumstation der Fall ist. “

Gitarren im Weltall

Früher arbeitete Thomas Reiter auf der ISS und griff auch mal zur Gitarre. Heute ist er Direktor der Europäischen Raumfahrtagentur und mahnt: Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit auf der ISS sollte stärker im Vordergrund stehen.

Parmesan, Schokolade und Tiramisu. Musikvideos und Unmengen von Bildern. Wer in den vergangenen Monaten die Geschehnisse auf der Internationalen Raumstation ISS verfolgt hat, konnte den Eindruck gewinnen, die sechsköpfige Crew ist vor allem zum Spaß im All: Der Kanadier Chris Hadfield, bis Mitte Mai Kommandant des orbitalen Außenpostens, griff zum Abschied beispielsweise zur Gitarre und drehte ein berührendes Musikvideo, das bei YouTube inzwischen mehr als 16 Millionen Mal abgerufen wurde.

How long did it take you to recover from your long trip into space?

The first severe effects were still perceivable the morning after landing, but then recovery progressed very nicely. Right now, four weeks after landing, I don’t feel anything. So within three to four weeks the effects are almost over.

What kind of effects did you feel?

There are basically three systems in the body which are affected: the vestibular (balance) system, which shows the most pronounced effect; the orthostatic system, which controls blood pressure and becomes apparent after landing, when you stand upright for a long time and get dizzy easily; and the muscles, which need to re-adapt to gravity. Of course I did a lot of physical exercise in orbit. This helps a lot in accelerating the recovery process. You need to keep your muscles trained while weightless, otherwise they would disappear. But in the first hours after landing, the effects are pretty pronounced.
