Today we remember astronaut Jack Swigert on his birthday. Jack was selected by NASA in 1966 and served on the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 7 mission. Later he was assigned to the backup crew for Apollo 13, but was called upon to replace Ken Mattingly on the prime crew.

Due to a failure in the service module's cryogenic oxygen system, Apollo 13 never made it to the Moon. Jack and his fellow crew members worked closely with mission control to get home safely. At the end of this first and final spaceflight, he logged 142 hrs and 54 min in space.

Jack went on to serve as the Executive Director of the Committee on Science and Technology for the U.S. House of Representatives. He later resigned from NASA and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982.
