Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman looks back at the landmark Apollo 8 mission.



Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to circle the Moon, is best remembered for its Earthrise photo, and for the Christmas message its crew broadcast to the world from orbit on Christmas Eve, 1968.

Apollo 8’s Commander, Frank Borman, spoke to us from his home in Billings, Montana about how, for him, escaping Earth’s gravitational pull for the first time was much more about winning the Cold War than space exploration.

Even before launch, you knew that Apollo 8 would be your last flight with NASA. Why?

I was there to participate in the Cold War battle with the Soviets. I was confident that Apollo 8 would succeed, and that the Soviets were beat. There was no way on God’s green Earth that I was going to go back to the moon to pick up rocks.

Jim (Lovell) and Bill (Anders) were different sorts. Bill was interested in geology and Jim had always been interested in space and rockets. I was more interested in airplanes than spacecraft.

Susan Borman, z domu Bugbee, która w 1950 roku poślubiła astronautę programów Gemini i Apollo, Franka Bormana, zmarła 7 września 2021 roku.

Susan Borman lived an unselfish, courageous life, fought a long, valiant battle with Alzheimer's and died on Sept. 7, 2021, as always, a committed Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the very best in every category and we miss her more each day.
Cremation has taken place and Susan will be interred at West Point at a later date.

Obecnie 3 załogi z 15. załogowych statków kosmicznych Apollo mają najwięcej żyjących uczestników (9, 13, ASTP).
Żadna z nich nie ma już 3. żyjących załogantów.

November 9, 2023 — Former NASA astronaut Frank Borman, who in 1968 led the first mission to fly humans to the moon, has died at the age of 95.

Borman's death in Billings, Montana on Tuesday (Nov. 7) was confirmed by NASA.

The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on the passing of former NASA astronaut Col. (ret.) Frank Borman, who passed away Nov. 7, in Billings, Montana, at the age of 95.

“Today we remember one of NASA’s best. Astronaut Frank Borman was a true American hero. Among his many accomplishments, he served as the commander of the Apollo 8 mission, humanity’s first mission around the Moon in 1968.

“His lifelong love for aviation and exploration was only surpassed by his love for his wife Susan.

“Frank began his career as an officer with the U.S. Air Force. His love of flying proved essential through his positions as a fighter pilot, operational pilot, test pilot, and assistant professor. His exceptional experience and expertise led him to be chosen by NASA to join the second group of astronauts.

“In addition to his critical role as commander of the Apollo 8 mission, he is a veteran of Gemini 7, spending 14 days in low-Earth orbit and conducting the first rendezvous in space, coming within a few feet of the Gemini 6 spacecraft.

“Frank continued his passion for aviation after his time with NASA as the CEO of Eastern Airlines.

“Frank knew the power exploration held in uniting humanity when he said, ‘Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.’ His service to NASA and our nation will undoubtedly fuel the Artemis Generation to reach new cosmic shores.”

I looked up to the early Apollo astronauts like Frank Borman.
I even have the helmet he wore on Gemini 7 and the watch he wore on Apollo 8 in my office, as a reminder of the contributions this great Tucsonan made to space exploration.

Like many of you, the news of Frank Borman’s passing is tough to hear. Frank was a NASA institution, his life dedicated to aviation and space – from fighter pilot, to test pilot, to astronaut and beyond. His Apollo 8 Christmas reading of Genesis still echoes. After retiring as an astronaut, Mr Borman led the troubled Eastern Airlines in 1975.

He was inducted into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1993, and had a section of expressway between Indiana and Illinois named after him.
