Uczestnik pierwszej misji dla Departamentu Obrony.

Wahadłowiec pierwszy raz wystartował  wtedy w styczniu.

Niskie temperatury podczas startu spowodowały, że „O-ringi" nie uszczelniały odpowiednio gorących gazów wewnątrz komory spalania.
Po roku wada stała się przyczyną tragedii.

Była to jednocześnie jedna z najkrótszych misji operacyjnych w programie STS.

Ciekawostka: astronauta Pentagonu w tej misji miał taki sam miesiąc i dzień urodzenia.

Astronauta wziął także m.in. udział jako specjalista misji w wyprawie z rekordowo liczną załogą.

Buchli (pronounced Buck-lee), born in New Rockford, has represented North Dakota in the fields of aviation and space exploration with immense skill and dedication, captivating and inspiring North Dakotans and space enthusiasts around the world. Buchli became the first North Dakotan to fly in space and is a veteran of four space flights. He has orbited the Earth 319 times, traveled 7.74 million miles and spent more than 20 days in space.
