Brała udział w misji poświęconej wyniesieniu sondy kosmicznej Galileo.
Jej staż w NASA wyniósł 34 lata.

Jak rozdílná doba to byla dobře popisuje zážitek Shannon Lucid. Ta byla členem posádky STS-51-G. A problémem třeba bylo, že jí byly na palubě vidět holé nohy…

A když po misi letěli na oficiální návštěvu Saudské Arábie, tak Shannon nemohla letět sama. Saudové totiž v té době nedovolovali samotným ženám navštěvovat jejich zemi (!).

Řešení podle nich bylo, že by byla oficiálně označená titulem „čestná dcera“ velitele mise Dan Brandensteina nebo „čestná sestra“ jiného člena posádky Johna Fabiana...
