Over the years since project Apollo, many of those astronauts have written books about their experiences. The books have been memoirs, dealing with their military life, joining NASA, their training, the strains on their family life, the experience of traveling to the Moon, and either going around it, landing and walking on it, or even driving on it and what they discovered there. Long awaited has been a book written by Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, lunar module pilot on Apollo 17. Schmitt was the only trained geologist to fly on the lunar landing missions. His book Return to the Moon has just been published, and as the titled suggests, it deals with the future and not the past. The subtitle Exploration, Enterprise, and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space conveys the essence of the economic benefits of returning to the Moon and exploiting the possibilities they hold for both the energy needs of a permanent base on the Moon, and of the Earth.

Congrats to Jack Schmitt, who turns 90 OTD. Selected to NASA in 1965 (Group 4), he was the LMP on Apollo 17 in Dec 1972, the 11th man to walk on the Moon & to date the only geologist to have done so. After leaving NASA in 1975, he served as a Senator from New Mexico (1977-1983).
