Armstrong Leads With Left
July 2, 1970

WASHINGTON, July 1 (AP) —Neil A. Armstrong, the first man on the moon, started to take an oath of office today With his wrong hand on the Bible. Dr. Thomas O. Paine, head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, swore him in as NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics. “Put your right hand on the Bible,” Dr. Paine, said. Mr. Armstrong obeyed and raised his left hand. Dr., Paine quickly corrected his instructions amid laughter.

Cheers to new frontiers in 2026! 🎇
50 years ago today, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory rang in the new year with a float in the Rose Bowl Parade celebrating the Viking Project's search for life on Mars.

On Jan 1, 1976, viewers watched from the side of the street as a flower-covered float featuring the Viking orbiter and a full-scale model of the Viking lander drove by as part of the Rose Bowl Parade. “The Search for Life” float was sponsored by The Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West, and designed in cooperation with NASA.

The landing of Viking 1 was planned for July 4th of that year, the United States Bicentennial, but ultimately took place on July 20, 1976, the seventh anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. The Viking I lander was the first completely successful Mars landing mission.

Happy New Year to all our favorite lifeforms near and far!

Dryden played a critical role in nurturing flight research that has largely defined NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center. The center was named in his honor in 1976, and then was subsequently renamed in honor of Neil Armstrong in 2014, at which time, the Western Aeronautical Test Range was renamed the Dryden Aeronautical Test Range. (...)

Dryden helped shape policy that led to development of the high-speed research program and its record-setting X-15 rocket aircraft. His leadership was evident in establishing vertical- and short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft programs, and he sought solutions to the problem of atmospheric re-entry for piloted spacecraft and ballistic missiles.
