RS Schweickart - 25.10.1935

Schweickart opuścił właz LM "Spider" i udał się wzdłuż zewnętrznej strony pojazdu kosmicznego do włazu CM  „Gumdrop” , gdzie Scott stał podczas SEVA.

W 2023 została ustanowiona Nagroda Schweickarta w celu zwiększenia zdolności do ochrony życia na Ziemi przed potencjalnie katastrofalnymi  konsekwencjami uderzenia asteroidy poprzez rozwój obrony planetarnej.
Nagroda przyznawana jest za innowacyjne pomysły w rozwoju dziedzin związanych z obronnością planetarną.
Przyznawana jest 30 czerwca.

Well, to make a long story short, what we ended up with is coming up with the idea of an organization of people who'd flown in space, which, after a number of choices, became the Association of Space Explorers, of which now 90 percent of everybody who's flown in space is a member, but in those days it was anathema. I mean, that initiative of mine to form that organization—and we can talk a little more about the way in which I did it—but basically, that initiative to form that organization was seen by many people as Schweickart being a commie pinko, you know, turncoat. The word “traitor” occasionally even came into use in some people who didn't know what they were talking about.

'It Is Only a Matter of Time Until a Big One Hits'
Von Christoph Seidler 01.12.2016, 18.59 Uhr

(...) Schweickart: I am interested in climate change and other topics too. But this thing is so huge, in the worst case we are talking about the end of our civilization. In the short term, some deadly virus might be more important, but in the long run there is hardly anything more important than asteroids. Journalists often put things into either-or scenarios. But we can both prevent asteroid impacts and address climate change. It's not either-or. (...)

We all assume in our own way some responsibility for our mothers and fathers, for that matter but they don’t count much. (laughter) And here we are celebrating 50 years of human eyes first seeing and recognizing and to some extent still in the process of acknowledging that responsibility which is intrinsic in the understanding that we are the only life in our corner of the universe and this evolutionary process, in which we’re a part, will continue and we now, with the power that we have, our cells, our brains, the machines that we create are responsible for the continued evolution of life out of Mother Earth. That’s what Apollo was all about. It wasn’t Rusty Schweickart or Neil Armstrong or anybody else. It wasn’t the Apollo 9 mission or the Apollo 11 mission. It was that moment in time that will be remembered 10,000 years from now, 100,000 years from now.

"The most beautiful sight in orbit, or one of the most beautiful sights, is a urine dump at sunset," says Schweickart. "It's really spectacular."

Happy 89th birthday to retired NASA astronaut Russell "Rusty" Schweickart 🥳
Rusty Schweickart joined NASA in October 1963. In March 1969, he served as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 9, logging 241 hours in space.
Here's to many more happy orbits around the Sun!

New Heroes: Portrait of Apollo 9 Astronaut, Rusty Schweickart for @theNASEM and @theNAEng.
On a foggy morning in Petaluma, I photographed Rusty Schweickart at @stewartbrand & @Ryanphelan6's ranch. Fog from the coast softened the horizon, muting the light. The moment was still, and Rusty was too. A man who once floated above Earth now stood on steel rails, among olive trees and mist, at ease in both realms.

As lunar module pilot on Apollo 9, Rusty played a vital role in the Moon landing’s success. The mission was the first full test of the Apollo spacecraft in Earth orbit, including the lunar module’s debut as a separate vehicle. Rusty piloted the untested craft, called Spider, through open space, proving its readiness for the historic journey. Apollo 9 was a cornerstone, ensuring all systems worked in harmony.

Rusty Schweickart once stepped into open space, tethered only by his suit and skill. Today, he guards our fragile planet, always looking up, always thinking ahead, always serving the world he saw whole. yond metaphor. It became his call to serve. He co-founded the Association of Space Explorers to share this vision and later helped establish the  B612 Foundation to shield Earth from asteroid impacts, advocating for planetary defense long before it gained traction.

Trained as an engineer and seasoned as a test pilot, Rusty carries a philosopher’s heart. He has devoted decades to humanity’s future, seeking practical ways to reduce our risks. Over lunch with Stewart and Ryan, he spoke of space and olive cultivation in the same calm voice, asking thoughtful questions and listening intently. There was no show, only presence.

Rusty’s groundedness stands out. Despite extraordinary achievements, he remains approachable, deeply human. He brings calm and clarity to every space. He has done more than most, yet carries it lightly.
