"I put [the tomato] in a little bag, and one of my crewmates was doing [an] event with some schoolkids, and I thought it'd be kind of cool to show the kids, 'Hey guys, this is the first tomato harvested in space,' " he said. "Then, I was pretty confident that I Velcroed it where I was supposed to Velcro it, and then I came back and it was gone."

Rubio estimated he spent between 8 and 20 hours of his own time searching for the lost fruit. (Whether tomatoes are fruits or vegetables depends on who you ask. In the 19th century, the Supreme Court came down on the side of vegetables — sort of.) (...)

09.06.2026 astronauta został oficjalnie nominowany do załogi Artemis III jako specjalista misji.
Miałem nadzieję, że zostanie wybrany.
Rekord najdłuższego lotu amerykańskiego astronauty wciąż do niego należy.
W 2. pierwszych załogach programu Artemis pod tym względem znaleźli się rekordziści wg płci.

NASA astronaut, Frank Rubio, visited El Salvador

As the last item on his agenda, the NASA astronaut visited the president-elect of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who congratulated Colonel Rubio for the recognition he achieved after setting the record for the longest single space mission by a U.S. astronaut and for spending 371 days in space. He also thanked him for inspiring young people during his week-long visit to the country and for proudly representing El Salvador.

The sight of Colonel Rubio was a source of inspiration for Salvadoran children, youth and adults. “I hope that my mission can serve as an example that in life things can be done, maybe not everyone can be an astronaut, but everyone can do great things,” urged Dr. Rubio.

NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, also a doctor and a helicopter pilot, served at Fort Benning and Hunter Army Airfield before notching a space record.

As an astronaut, Frank Rubio has seen the lights of Atlanta from space. As an Army doctor in labor and delivery at the Fort Benning hospital in Columbus, he has also seen the faces of parents aglow when he welcomed their babies into the world.

Rubio, a multiskilled mission specialist for NASA — he has flown military helicopters and spent a year aboard the International Space Station where he famously grew tomatoes — will return to orbit next year aboard the Orion spacecraft.

That mission, Artemis III, with Rubio and three other crew members, will travel in low Earth orbit to test equipment that will land Artemis IV astronauts on the moon in early 2028. (...)
