Meet the two new Canadian additions to future NASA missions: Joshua Kutryk and Jenni Sidey-Gibbons, who is also Canada's youngest astronaut

Joshua Kutryk, who grew up in a farm in Alberta, is seen in a video by the Canadian Space Agency.

This week, Canada announced mission objectives for two of its four active astronauts. Joshua Kutryk will be traveling to the International Space Station in 2025 for a six-month stay. And Jenni Sidey-Gibbons has been named to the backup crew of Artemis 2, which will launch as early as next year for a trip around the moon. Jeremy Hansen is already part of that mission, meaning if he can’t make the trip, another Canadian will fly in his place. (...)

Montreal-based space educator Trevor Kjorlien said that with NASA planning to decommission the station in 2030, Kutryk may be the last Canadian to live on the station.

“I think it's a prime opportunity over the next six months after he launches for many Canadians to be able to see [the station], because it'll probably be the last time they see it with a Canadian on board,” he said. (...)

4) ‘It feels really magical’: Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk prepares for spaceflight

As a child, Joshua Kutryk dreamed of becoming an astronaut, even though he never thought the goal was actually within reach.

Now, the Fort Saskatchewan-born astronaut is preparing to travel to the International Space Station, a moment he says “feels really magical.”

“It’s a lot of excitement,” Kutryk said in an interview with CTV Your Morning on Tuesday. “I’ve been dreaming about this for a long time, a lifetime, training for it for about five years.”

Kutryk is set to launch in September as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission, alongside U.S. astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov.

The mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than Sept. 12 from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, with the crew travelling to the station inside a Crew Dragon capsule.

Kutryk is expected to spend about six months aboard the International Space Station.

For Kutryk, the journey is the culmination of a childhood fascination.

“As a kid, I was fascinated with exploring, wanted to be an astronaut, (but I) didn’t think it would be possible,” he said. “I always viewed it as, sort of just this, almost unattainable goal, but it was still really good for me to have that goal. It definitely had a huge impact on my life, still does.”

Kutryk, a colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces and a test pilot, was selected as a Canadian Space Agency astronaut in 2017. He said he has had plenty of help and “a lot of luck” along the way.

“It’s awesome. It’s exciting and … it’s even more so to be doing it as a Canadian,” he said.

Once aboard the space station, Kutryk said he will have two broad responsibilities: keeping the complex machinery operating and conducting scientific research.

“The space station is probably the most complicated thing humanity has ever built,” he said. “My job is to keep it running and maintain it, fix things, operate it, control it … very technical work that we as a crew have been training for years now.”

Although he is not a scientist by training, Kutryk said the crew carries out research designed by researchers from around the world, including many Canadian projects planned during his mission.

“It’s a very unique floating laboratory basically, where we can do science that we can’t do on Earth,” he said.

For Kutryk, the mission also represents another chapter in Canada’s long involvement in space exploration.

“A lot of Canadian pride,” he said. “It’s pretty neat that Canada’s on this and that we’re still there doing what we’ve always done so well, which is live right there in the forefront of space flight.”

Leaving these three (plus one on the way) is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But that has always been the nature of exploration. Words from Fridtjof Nansen, describing his departure for the North Pole, resonate in my mind:

“Behind me lay all I held dear in life. And what lay before me? Happy child, little do you know what life is — how strangely mingled and how full of change… and now, a farewell to home. It was the darkest hour of the whole journey.”

'I don't really believe it yet': Canada's Joshua Kutryk and Crew-13 astronauts on their way to ISS
Updated 22 minutes ago

(...) Kutryk's family was there to watch him launch into space — as was his Grade 6 teacher, Ted Hupé, whom he's called an inspiration.

Hupé travelled to Florida to watch his former student make his journey into space. Speaking to CBC News Network, he said that even as a 12-year-old in 1994, it was clear Kutryk was driven and he already wanted to become a pilot.

"In some ways, I'm not surprised this happened," said Hupé, who taught Kutryk in Whitehorse, where he and his family spent five years before returning to Alberta.

The two stayed in touch over the years. In 2010, when Hupé was a principal at a school in Whitehorse, Kutryk — then a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot — called him unexpectedly.

"He gave me a call and he said, 'Look out your window.' I look out my window and there's an F-18 flying by," Hupé recalled in a 2017 interview with CBC. (...)
