27.05.2024 rząd węgierski, w 44. rocznicę połączenia Sojuza 36 z pierwszym Węgrem na pokładzie Bertalanem Farkasem ze stacją kosmiczną Salut 6, ogłosił nazwisko 2. narodowego astronauty, który weźmie udział w misji kosmicznej pod egidą Axiom Space.

Komunikat prasowy nie precyzuje, o którą dokładnie misję chodzi.
Długość trwania misji (ponad 3 tygodnie) nie pozwala przypisać Węgra do Axiom-4.
Z kolei brak danych szczegółowych nt lotu Kapu nie pozwala jednoznacznie wykluczyć takiej możliwości.

The official announcement doesn’t say any details on that.
They always claim that it will be a 30-day mission and Ax-4 seems to be 14-21 days so it could perhaps be Ax-5.
Once there’s any further update, will share it with you!

Hungary Complete Its Astronaut Selection Process

Hungary has completed its astronaut selection process, choosing 32-year-old mechanical engineer Tibor Kapu to fly into space aboard a commercial Axiom mission.

In 2021, Hungary adopted its National Space Strategy and launched the Hungarian to Orbit (HUNOR) initiative as part of that strategy. With a budget of $99 million, the initiative aimed to send just the second Hungarian to fly into space after Bertalan Farkas became the first in 1980.

In July 2022, Hungary signed a memorandum of understanding with Axiom Space to send one of its citizens to the International Space Station aboard its privately chartered SpaceX Crew Dragon missions. In September 2023, the pair signed a spaceflight framework agreement to cement the mission in the Axiom manifest.

With no active astronauts to call on, Hungary initiated a selection process in late 2021. A total of 244 candidates applied for the position, and the country began its multi-stage selection process. In March 2023, the top four candidates were presented at a press conference, after which they began extensive training in space dynamics, light aircraft piloting, and rigorous physical and scientific work.

On 26 May 2024, to coincide with the 44th anniversary of the launch of the first Hungarian astronaut aboard Soyuz 36, Tibor Kapu and his backup Gyula Cserényi were announced. The announcement was made on the tarmac of the Liszt Ferenc Airport by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó. According to Szijjártó, the final decision had been made the night before.

“Soon, there will be a young Hungarian man who will not be traveling in the usual way. Forty-four years ago, Bertalan Farkas flew into space as the first Hungarian astronaut, and the next Hungarian astronaut will soon embark on a mission as well.”

While the Axiom flight that Kapu will be launched aboard has not yet been confirmed, Orsolya Ferencz, the Hungarian foreign ministry’s commissioner for space science, had previously stated that the mission would take place towards the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Pierwszy i jednocześnie ostatni Węgier wyruszył w kosmos niemal pięć dekad temu.
Generał brygady i pilot wojskowy Bertalan Farkas w kosmiczną misję wyruszył 26.05.1980 na pokładzie statku kosmicznego Sojuz 36. Dokładnie 44 lata temu, 27.05.1980, odbyło się dokowanie do radzieckiej stacji orbitalnej Salut-6. 03.06.1980 w kapsule Sojuza 35 węgierski kosmonauta wrócił na Ziemię.

Nie znamy dokładnie umowy podpisanej z AxiomSpace, ale wyraźnie większy koszt misji daje do myślenia.
Można też spekulować, że może 2 loty 2-tygodniowe z udziałem Węgrów dojdą do skutku.

Ax-5 to, wg obecnych spekulacji, ma być brytyjski lot (przynajmniej od razu skład załogi był oczywisty).

No to chyba mamy potwierdzenie (choć z węgierskiego źródła) składu załogi Axiom-4:

Tibor Kapu: Przeżywamy najlepszy czas naszego życia

"Mamy niesamowitą załogę i z pewnością najlepszego dowódcę w historii" - mówi RMF FM węgierski astronauta Tibor Kapu, który wraz ze Sławoszem Uznańskim i Shubhanshu Shuklą z Indii przygotowuje się do lotu na Międzynarodową Stację Kosmiczną. Dowódcą misji będzie niezwykle doświadczona amerykańska astronautka Peggy Whitson. Shukla, który jest pilotem wojskowym, będzie pilotem misji Axiom-4, z kolei Kapu, podobnie jak Uznański, będą inżynierami misji. Węgier mówi Grzegorzowi Jasińskiemu, że eksperymenty, które będzie prowadził na orbicie, są wciąż w fazie przygotowania, a będą się koncentrować na zagadnieniach związanych z długotrwałymi lotami kosmicznymi.

Grzegorz Jasiński: Chciałbym zapytać o proces wyboru astronautów na Węgrzech. To było inaczej, niż w przypadku Sławosza. To było inaczej niż w przypadku Shuksa. Jak to było na Węgrzech?

Tibor Kapu: To było trochę inne. To prawda. Mieliśmy proces selekcji, który rozpoczęliśmy pod koniec stycznia 2022 roku. Ważne zgłoszenia przysłało 247 osób. Początek tej selekcji odbywał się we współpracy z ESA, co oznacza, że przeszliśmy te same testy zdolności poznawczych, a następnie tę samą ocenę psychologiczną. Następnie rozpoczęliśmy naszą selekcję medyczną z powrotem na Węgrzech, w Budapeszcie, we współpracy z naszym uniwersytetem medycznym. Pod koniec marca 2023 roku została nas czwórka. Wtedy rozpoczęliśmy nasze podstawowe szkolenie, które wciąż było częścią selekcji. Zostaliśmy przyjęci do programu HUNOR (Hungarian to Orbit), potem pod koniec maja tego roku, dokładnie 26 maja, co było dokładnie tą samą datą, kiedy Bertalan Farkas leciał w kosmos 44 lata temu, zostałem wybrany razem z moim kolegą, Gyulą Cserényi. Ale trzeba podkreślić, że cały proces selekcji przebiegał w świetnej współpracy z Europejską Agencją Kosmiczną, firmą Axiom Space, nieco z NASA i naszym programem HUNOR.

Wspomniał pan Bertalana Farkasa. Oczywiście, nie można nie zapytać o niego, ponieważ to zabawna historia, że zarówno Indie, Polska, jak i Węgry miały pierwszych astronautów ponad 40 lat temu, w ramach programu Interkosmos Związku Radzieckiego. Czy spotkał pan Bertalana Farkasa? Czy był częścią procesu wyboru astronautów? Czy zadawał mu pan jakieś pytania?

Zdecydowanie. I ma pan całkowitą rację. Był i właściwie nadal jest częścią całego procesu i naszego programu. I oczywiście, jest świetnym uzupełnieniem programu, ponieważ do tej pory jest jedyną osobą na Węgrzech, która ma takie doświadczenie kosmiczne. Bardzo wcześnie w programie dał mi kilka dobrych rad. Powiedział mi, że powinienem podchodzić do wszystkiego z wielką cierpliwością i uśmiechem. Staram się robić jedno i drugie. Mam nadzieję, że to działa w większości przypadków. Ale tak, prawdę mówiąc, jest po prostu niesamowity i myślę, że jest jednym z tych ludzi na Węgrzech, którzy mają największy wkład w program i dla którego to też najwięcej znaczy.

Jakie jest znaczenie twojej misji dla węgierskiego programu kosmicznego? Jak byś się umieścił na mapie tego programu na przyszłość?

Cóż, celem programu HUNOR było wybranie Węgra, który będzie mógł przeprowadzić węgierskie badania na pokładzie Międzynarodowej Stacji Kosmicznej. Znam niektóre z dziedzin, ponieważ, jak już wspomniałem, proces wyboru trwa, głównie z udziałem NASA. Oczywiście musimy upewnić się i oni muszą się upewnić, że bierzemy na pokład tylko takie badania, które muszą tam trafić, czyli nie można ich przeprowadzić na Ziemi. Każda minuta, którą tam spędzimy, wiele kosztuje. I także musimy być pewni, że wszystko to jest bezpieczne dla aparatury, dla samej Stacji. Mogę powiedzieć, że większość naszych zagadnień badawczych będzie dotyczyła długoterminowych misji kosmicznych i największych problemów, które w związku z nimi musimy rozwiązać. Jestem niezwykle podekscytowany i również bardzo dumny z naszych badaczy na Węgrzech. Podczas programu ogłosiliśmy otwarty nabór tych eksperymentów i otrzymaliśmy ponad trzy tuziny. Pracujemy nad tym, aby wszystkie mogły być wykonane na pokładzie ISS. I pochodzą one naprawdę z wszystkich części naszego bardzo małego, ale bardzo zdolnego kraju. Więc jestem z tego niezwykle dumny.

Czy może mi pan powiedzieć coś o najtrudniejszej i najłatwiejszej części szkolenia? Czy to było po prostu, jak bułka z masłem? Czy może były jakieś trudności, przez które musiał pan przejść?

Najłatwiejsza tak naprawdę jest współpraca z tymi wszystkimi kolegami, nie tylko z moimi kolegami, którzy koordynują nasze, wiesz, codzienne życie, ale głównie z moimi, członkami załogi. Naprawdę wierzę, że mamy niesamowitą załogę. Poszedłbym nawet dalej i powiedział, że mamy najlepszą załogę w historii. Z pewnością mamy najlepszego dowódcę w historii. Ale dodatkowo, praca z Shuksem, a szczególnie ze Sławoszem, jest niezwykła. Ci faceci są niesamowici. I naprawdę mam nadzieję, że Polska jest z niego dumna, ponieważ jest astronautą, którego pański naród mógłby sobie życzyć, niezwykle błyskotliwy i bardzo mądry, bardzo bystry i zawsze w dobrym nastroju. Więc naprawdę, naprawdę lubię z nimi pracować. Kapu explained.

He added that the Hungarian space program focuses on building its strengths in space heritage, such as in dosimetry, space nutrition, life sciences, and human biology. He noted that within the framework of the program, they made an open call asking all the Hungarian universities, companies, and research groups who might be interested, what science experiments they would do in space.

As a result, “we collected dozens of experiments from all over the country.”

The goal of the Hungarian space program, he said, is to “gain a foothold in the space community, to contribute to the global space industrial academia, and to sit at the same table with the giants. Thanks to this mission, here we are: we are sitting at this table.”

The device has two systems: an active and a backup system, both low-energy.

Because of the small weight and the low energy, it will be “a very good candidate” for future log-time space flights,
he said.

Regarding the research project on microgravity, they will conduct physical experiments, as well as medical demonstrations. He pointed out that they will test new methods for treating the so-called Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS), i.e. visual impairment caused by microgravity.

Farkas Bertalan is részt vett a kiképzésben

Kapu Tibor beszámolt arról, hogy Farkas Bertalan magyar űrhajóslegenda meghatározó szerepet töltött be a felkészítésében. A magyar űrhajós elmondta, hogy Farkas részt vett a HUNOR kiválasztási folyamatában és az alapkiképzésben is, amely 14-14 hónapig tartott. A teljes folyamatot „nagyapai szeretettel” felügyelte végig.

Az első magyar űrhajós több hasznos tanácsot is adott Kapunak és társainak. Az egyik legfontosabb az volt, hogy mindig legyenek türelmesek, ami szerinte az űrrepülés kulcsfontosságú eleme. Azt is tanácsolta, hogy minden kihívást mosollyal az arcukon közelítsenek meg.

Kapu Tibor elmondta, hogy Farkas Bertalan szorosan követi a felkészülésüket, és reméli, hogy a start napján is ott lehet majd.

Kapu olyan tárgyakat is magával visz az űrbe, amelyek kapcsolódnak Farkas Bertalan küldetéséhez. Ezek közül néhány meglepetés, amiről nem beszélhetett a kamerák előtt, de elárulta, hogy biztosan magával viszi a hármasukról (ő, Farkas és a tartalék űrhajós) készült közös fotót. Bár jelentős súly- és térfogat-korlátozások vannak, magával viszi a szülővárosából kapott magyar zászlót is. (...)

According to Balázs Nagy, R&D director of the HUNOR – Hungarian Astronaut Programme, Kapu will conduct around 25 Hungarian-led experiments developed by universities, research institutes, and private companies. In total, the mission will involve roughly 60 experiments from 31 countries—a record for any Axiom mission to date. These studies will span a range of scientific fields, including cancer research, diabetes, and medical innovation. One goal is to pave the way for sending the first astronaut with type 2 diabetes into space.

Hungarian TV channel TV2 will broadcast the launch live in a special programme, as confirmed on the HUNOR Facebook page.

A HUNOR - Magyar Űrhajós Program és a Stühmer Kft. szerdai közleménye szerint együttműködésük - melynek részeként a magyar csokoládé is eljuthat az űrbe - 2024 áprilisában kezdődött, az egyeztetéseket követően pedig a Stühmer hivatalos támogatóként csatlakozott a magyar űrmisszióhoz.

"Amikor először felmerült az ötlet, hogy csokoládét küldjünk az űrbe, elsőre lehetetlen kihívásnak tűnt. A NASA szigorú követelmények elé állított bennünket, hiszen az űrben tapasztalható különleges körülményeknek kell megfelelnie a felrepített csokoládénak" - idézi a közlemény Mazurka Évát, a Stühmer Kft. minőségirányítási vezetőjét.

A megoldás érdekében a cég csapata többek közt a Magyar Agrár- és Élettudományi Egyetemmel (MATE) közösen kezdett el kísérletezni. A gyors kutatási folyamat után a vállalatnak egy részben saját fejlesztéssel sikerült létrehoznia egy olyan csokoládét, amely megfelel az extrém űrbéli környezet kihívásainak. Az alapot a Stühmer hagyományos Korfu szelete adta, amely összetételének és állagának köszönhetően ellenáll a nyomáskülönbségnek, a súlytalanságnak és a hőmérséklet-ingadozásnak is - tették hozzá. A lap idézi Kapu Tibort, aki kifejtette, hogy a fahéjas tekercs, az áfonyás zabkása, a füstölt pulyka, a puding és a szárított mangó a kedvence. A kutatóűrhajós pedig egy érdekességre is felhívta a figyelmet, mégpedig arra, hogy az űrben nincs kenyér, csak tortilla.

Nincs kenyér az űrhajón

A magyarok számára alapélelmiszer a kenyér, és épp ez az, amit nem ehet majd az űrhajóban Kapu Tibor.

Kenyér helyett azért szerepel tortillalap az űrhajósok étrendjében, mert mikrogravitációs körülmények között (azaz a súlytalansághoz legközelebb álló állapotban) kerülni kell az élesztőből készült tésztafélék, így a kenyerek fogyasztását is. A kenyér ugyanis morzsálódik, a lebegő morzsadarabok pedig beleszállhatnak a berendezésekbe, tönkretéve az űrhajót. (...)

Kipróbálja a Rad Nano űrhajós dozimétert, amely a háttérsugárzáson kívül fényt, mágneses mezőt, légnyomást, nedvességet és szén-dioxid-szintet is mér. A magyar űrhajós ezeken túl az érte izguló földiek kedvéért háromdimenziós bejárást készít a Nemzetközi Űrállomásról, fotókat visz magával, gyerekekkel rádiózik és a kérdéseikre válaszol. Le saviez-vous ? (d’après un communiqué Institut Franz Liszt de Paris)

Les deux chercheurs spatiaux hongrois sélectionnés dans le cadre du programme HUNOR portent fièrement le logo du programme, inspiré de l'invention hongroise, le Gömböc.

L'élément central du logo du programme HUNOR est la figure emblématique d'origine hongroise, le Csodaszarvas, qui symbolise l'aspiration et le destin.
Selon la légende, cet animal mythologique a attiré les ancêtres de notre pays vers une nouvelle terre fertile et guide la société actuelle vers les étoiles.

La forme du patch est inspirée d'une invention hongroise, le Gömböc.
Il s'agit du premier corps homogène tridimensionnel convexe comportant un unique point d'équilibre stable et un unique point d'équilibre instable. Posé sur une surface plane, il revient toujours à la même position.

Outre le drapeau hongrois, un dessin de la station spatiale internationale figure également en place centrale sur le patch, en référence aux expériences scientifiques hongroises que l'astronaute hongrois mènera à bord de la station spatiale.

Les quatre étoiles représentent la constellation du Sextant, visible depuis la Hongrie, qui, en plus d'être un symbole de découverte et de progrès scientifique, fait référence à l'amitié étroite qui s'est développée entre les quatre anciens candidats astronautes au cours de leur année et demie de formation.

Enfin, la Hongrie est représentée en or sur la représentation de la planète Terre. Cela symbolise le statut croissant de notre pays dans le secteur spatial mondial.

Good day, Tibor. This is Earth, and Budapest at the centre of it. Warm greetings to you. We need to clarify two things. Firstly, can I call you Tibor? Secondly, we’ve been told to avoid discussion of some topics. Please note the following: we cannot talk about politics, war, religion, advertising, gender, warming or pseudoscience. But these aren’t the important issues – what’s important is how you are, Tibor.

Tibor Kapu: Prime Minister, thank you very much for your welcome. I’m fine, thank you very much. It’s an honour to be able to speak not only to you today, but also to all the viewers. I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome all our dear viewers and those present. Tibor is fine, but it can be anything else – I also answer to Tibi, especially in Nyíregyháza. As I’ve said, I’m very well, and we’re in the middle of a busy working day. And I’ll try to avoid the topics you’ve mentioned, as I’m not really familiar with any of them.

Tibor, I was seventeen years old when I saw Bertalan Farkas launched into space. In this respect I’m one step ahead of you, because you’re the second I’ve been able to see. Everyone down here now wants to be Tibor Kapu, and if I were a child, I probably would too. Do you feel that?

I arrived on board the space station after a 26-hour journey. We’d been in space for 26 hours, and I had an hour between the docking and the welcome ceremony. In that hour I managed to call my parents, whose voices I heard for the first time in about a day and a half. They told me what an impact the launch had had on Hungarians and the Hungarian nation. So after this I feel, and I’m extremely happy, that one of the most important goals of the mission – to reach the Hungarian people with this – has been achieved.

We’re very proud of you for reaching such heights. There’s a debate down here – sometimes even within the Government – about whether it makes sense for Hungary to get involved in the international space industry and in space missions. We see it from the ground level, only from down here. What do you think about this?

For me, it’s not even a question. It’s my belief and conviction that small countries like Hungary, small nations, can have the biggest dreams. Nowadays the space sector is an industry and scientific discipline in which you don’t need to be a big player in order to join. You only have to look at the members of the Ax-4 mission, the spending on Ax-4, and its crew members. Alongside me I have an American colleague, an Indian colleague, and a Polish colleague. The Poles can’t be said to be the greatest space nation, although India and America are way ahead of us; but I think this is a very good example of how we can create great things in international cooperation. This is one thing. The other is that by any reasonable calculation, the space industry is a rapidly flourishing sector. Virtually every cent or every forint that we invest now will pay for itself six times over later – which may sound really good to the numbers people. Despite being an engineer I’m not always one of them, and for me a much more appealing thought is how many people can be inspired by this in the future. Whatever I’ve achieved in my life, I’ve always achieved it by looking to my role models and their teachings. This is why I’m here now. Among those role models are my father and, of course, Bertalan Farkas. If we can have a similar effect on young Hungarians, I think we’ve already won.

Yes, the world is full of temptations, both better and worse. Thank you for showing children the better kind of temptation. Tibor, could you tell us a little about what you’re doing? What are you doing when you’re not talking to us?

I spend most of my days doing experiments. I can say I’m very lucky because with the Ax-4 mission we’ve come up with about sixty experiments, and out of those sixty, about twenty-five are experiments that I can do alone as a Hungarian. This is an amazingly high number. Within the HUNOR Programme our researchers have been working for years to put together this large number of experiments – and it’s not only a large number, but they’re also of enormous scientific value. And here we can actually include almost everything – especially dosimetry, i.e. radiation measurement, which as Hungarians is effectively our heritage in space. Bertalan Farkas took a Pille dosimeter onto the Salyut 6 space station, and today the third generation of this instrument is in service here at the International Space Station. So I’m working on dosimetry and a lot of other experiments. So now I’m on my fourth day on board the space station, if I’m counting right. I’ve sown the first set of pepper, radish and wheat seeds, and put them in place; I’ve also been examining the mushrooms that we’ve brought up, which will be more important for us later on in the DNA testing. So I could say that it’s a busy day of experiments. We’re practically in the middle of the working day now, at around half past eleven, Greenwich Mean Time, so that’s mainly it. And when I’m not working, I try to relax. Over the last four days, rest has consisted of chatting to the international colleagues who have welcomed us here. The International Space Station has a very famous module called the Cupola. It’s a module with seven windows that always look down towards the Earth. I started my day there at 4 a.m., for example, because I saw that at about that time we’d have a very good passage over Hungary. So I got up with the Hungarians, because it was sunrise in Hungary and for us. I could see Lake Fertő [or Neusiedl] very well, Kecskemét, Szeged, the southern part of Lake Balaton and Keszthely; but everything else was cloudy, so I might have to wait for the best view.

Tibor, one hears all sorts of things about weightlessness. I’d like to ask you if common sense functions in the conditions of weightlessness up there.

I like to think it functions. We need it, because our working days are really busy. But it’s a fact that weightlessness has a lot of so-called harmful side effects or effects on the human body. One of these effects is probably visible on my face, because – thanks to a so-called “fluid shift”, with the heart working much harder than it should – body fluids are effectively pushed up into the upper part of the body. So you also have a slight weakening of the muscles, and a slight lessening or lowering of bone density. And in addition to all these effects, there’s also the fact that your brain has to adapt to this new environment. This is called “space fog” in English, but since I’ve been learning about these things we haven’t translated it into Hungarian. I certainly felt it during the first three days. Here on the space station it’s very easy to lose things or lose track of time, but I’m doing my best. So far things have gone well.

The research you’re doing – about thirty experiments I believe – is Hungarian research. Who entrusted you with it? Universities, private companies? Who are the people behind the research?

The Prime Minister has practically said everything for me. Hungarian universities, Hungarian research groups, Hungarian companies are involved in these projects. You could practically list every university, from ELTE to BME, Szeged, Debrecen and Pécs; and there are Hungarian companies that have been major players in the international space industry – but we also have new players. For us in the HUNOR Programme this is a tremendous, great joy, because we can say that there are companies and researchers that have entered the space world through the programme. But of course we also needed those of our researchers who have decades of experience.

Now, when we’re talking to each other, can you see us? Or can we only see you?

I’m afraid that it’s only you who can see me.

I was wondering what we look like from up there. I heard you might take some photos. What will you take photos of, what photos will you bring back to us?

That’s exactly the answer I wanted to give to the previous question, because everyone in Hungary is looking good from up here. I’ve had several opportunities to see the Carpathian Basin. About ten or so hours after our launch, we had a check-in from our Dragon capsule, our Dragon space capsule, when we hadn’t yet arrived at the space station and couldn’t yet dock. During that live check-in we were flying or orbiting over Hungary – which, if I remember correctly, showed in my speech, because I was quite emotional and not really prepared for those moments. So for months and years I’ve been talking about what it will probably feel like and what feelings will probably come over me when I see the Carpathian Basin from above. Now I can proudly say that these are truly emotional moments. The other is that I woke up at 4 o’clock this morning with the Hungarians, and I want to capture these moments in every way possible. I hope that I’ll see the Carpathian Basin both by day and by night. I don’t consider myself the best photographer, but I’ll do my best.

Tibor, what speed are you going at?

We’re currently travelling at 28,000 kilometres per hour. This speed is just enough to effectively circle the Earth, to maintain orbit around the Earth. This means that we’re 400 kilometres high up here, and there’s still gravity here, but we’re going sideways so fast that I could say that we’re always going round the Earth. We know that the Earth is spherical, which means that, to put it simply, while we’re falling one metre, we are also going sideways one metre, and this is why we’re practically floating in zero gravity all the time – as you can see from the microphone in front of me. I hope my voice is still audible. And because of this speed we’re changing position very quickly. When I looked down at the beginning of this conversation we were over the Great Lakes of Michigan, flying to New York, and it was daytime. Now we’re well into the middle of the Atlantic, which Gábor Rakonczay has recently crossed for the umpteenth time. And in about twenty minutes we’ll be entering another dark zone, because here on board the space station the days and nights change about sixteen times a day.

Tibor, what are your colleagues like? Are they treating you well, are they friendly? And what language do they speak?

My colleagues are treating me well, and I’m treating them well. We look after each other – perhaps that’s the most important thing. Our American commander, Peggy Whitson, came up with the mission. She’s the most experienced American astronaut, with 675 days in space – and now those days are being added to incrementally, they’re increasing day by day. I came up together with my other colleagues: our Indian pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, and Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland – who, like me, is a mission specialist on the mission. And in addition to these there are the people we’ve met here, who are a mixture of Americans, Russians and Japanese. They’re the space station’s permanent staff, and there are seven of them. So now there are four plus seven of us, eleven people aboard the space station, representing six nations. What’s more, seven of these eleven people are in space for the first time – which to me is a very good indication of how much the space industry is expanding and how much of a boom we’re talking about in that regard. I really like my colleagues on the mission with me, and I really hope they like me. We’ve been studying and training together for a year now, and we’ve got a lot of things under our belts. I can say that we’re one of the happiest crews to ever go into space.

And what are they feeding you? And have you been able to take any proper food up there?

I could bring food up with me. I also have Piros Arany [Hungarian paprika paste] and strong paprika, which I’m very proud of. One reason for my pride is that the food here is generally low in salt. Unfortunately, salt contributes to bone loss, and here, of course, bone loss, loss of bone density, is increased on board the space station. So we can’t eat very salty food. These are all packaged foods, some of which generally don’t have water in them, or have to be supplemented with water or reheated, and some of which are freeze-dried foods. These are all high-calorie foods, but ones that were easy to bring up because of they don’t contain water. And to give them a taste, we thought we’d bring up some Piros Arany and strong paprika, Erős Pistá [strong Hungarian paprika paste] for them. So when we’ve left after two weeks, that will stay here for the permanent staff, and that will also help to further boost the reputation of the Hungarians.

Tibor, one of the most attractive things about my job is that I have to see things as a whole. There are the ministries, they’re separate, and I have to see the whole thing as one, with all the Hungarians and the whole Carpathian Basin. But you’re in an even better position than me, because you see the whole world at once. Do you feel that this is a special experience? It’s something that no Hungarian has ever had, except my big brother Berci Farkas and you.
It really is a special experience, even if only in the sense that I came here as part of an international team. Within minutes of the launch we saw how beautiful our Earth is, how colourful and much, much brighter than I would have thought. And except for a dozen or so people, because there are two space stations orbiting the Earth at the moment, everyone else is down there on our only planet. It certainly makes you think. I’d like to share some of my most important and most meaningful experiences of this later, but I feel that it’s an extraordinary experience.

Tibor, we’re running out of time. One more thing I’d like to ask: can you see the war from up there?

From up here I can only see beautiful and good things. I can tell you that honestly: only beautiful colours, only beautiful clouds and beautiful cities. So that’s all I’ve seen so far.

We’re doubly envious of that. Thank you very much for the opportunity to talk to you, Tibor. God be with you. I wish you much strength and good health. We look forward to seeing you back home again.

You have been to Houston before, correct?

Yes, I spent a week there in April. It was very instructive; we visited NASA and Axiom Space, the company organizing the mission. We also spent part of the time in Philadelphia, where they have a centrifuge to simulate the effects of acceleration on the human body during space travel. We had to simulate all sorts of scenarios to ensure we could handle extreme conditions if necessary.

I read that the mission commander will be the seasoned astronaut and biochemist Peggy Whitson. Have you met her or your other two future teammates?

I have met Peggy Whitson, although I should note that I haven't received official confirmation that she will be our commander. I would be pleased if she were, as she is a living legend. You would be hard-pressed to list all the records she holds in the history of human spaceflight. She was present during our selection process, and I had the chance to talk to her. I also asked her for advice. She shared that she was an intern at NASA when the opportunity to become an astronaut arose, and she gave up a doctoral programme to try for it. All her colleagues told her it was the worst decision she could make, but she proved them wrong.

A zeneszámot egy óvodás kislány története ihlette, aki azért szeretett volna űrhajós lenni, hogy a mennyországban meglátogathassa a nagypapáját. Most a szerzemény Kapu Tibor közreműködésével új értelmet nyert. Az űrhajós a műsorban elárulta, hogy ez az alkotás számára igazi személyes ügy lett.– Az űrutazás alkalmából a lejátszási listámra olyan dalokat válogattam, amelyeket a világűrben is szívesen hallgattam volna. Az egyik általam választott szerzemény éppen Kovácsovics Fruzsi Űrhajós leszek című dala volt. Eleinte mégsem mertem meghallgatni, mert a szöveg mélysége, emberi üzenete túlságosan megérintett – fogalmazott.

Mint mondta, miután visszatért az űrből, felvette a kapcsolatot az énekesnővel, és hamar megfogalmazódott bennük az együttműködés gondolata. Kapu Tibor javaslatára az új verzió vonós kísérettel született meg, kiemelve annak lírai hangvételét. A közös dal bemutatója az M2 Petőfi TV műsorán volt látható. (...)
