06.04.1987 r. (w ramach 5 grupy kandydatów) przeszedł badania lekarskie i rozmowę kwalifikacyjną w JSC, ale nie został wybrany.

26.04.1993-06.05.1993 odbył pierwszy lot w charakterze specjalisty misji w STS-55/Deutschland 2 Columbia.
Na pokładzie promu kosmicznego znalazło się laboratorium Spacelab , na pokładzie którego przeprowadzono 88 eksperymentów z 11. krajów.
Załoga przeprowadziła pierwszy w kosmosie dożylny zastrzyk roztworu soli w ramach eksperymentu mającego na celu zbadanie reakcji organizmu ludzkiego na bezpośrednie uzupełnianie płynów.
 
03.02.1995-11.02.1995 odbył drugi lot w charakterze specjalisty misji w STS-63 Discovery.
Był to pierwszy lot wahadłowca kosmicznego rendez-vous bez dokowania do stacji kosmicznej Mir.

09.02.1995 Bernard Andrew Harris, Jr. został pierwszym astronautą o afrykańskich korzeniach, który wykonał spacer kosmiczny.

Jest profesorem nadzwyczajnym chorób wewnętrznych na Wydziale Medycznym Uniwersytetu Teksasu, profesorem nadzwyczajnym w University of Texas School of Public Health  , adiunktem w Baylor College of Medicine oraz profesorem w Szkole Medycznej Uniwersytetu Teksasu.

1996 został kierownikiem działu badań, wiceprezesem wydziału zdrowia i nauki.
 
Jest autorem i współautorem licznych artykułów naukowych.

NASA astronaut, UHCL alum talks dreams, goals, success

(...) Still, Harris said, there were many moments along the way that felt overwhelming and he considered giving up. "I was in college and I took organic chemistry and physics and a lot of really tough courses," he said. "If I made a B, I panicked that I might not get into medical school because my grades weren't good enough. I did qualify, but talk about tough courses! It gets so much tougher, and I was in classes with top students who were competing against each other."

Then, in astronaut training school, Harris had to learn how to fly a jet. "I was already a private pilot, but only a fixed-wing pilot, so I had to learn to fly a military jet that traveled close to the speed of sound," he said. "Those of us who are people of color feel a need to do well, because there are a lot of negative stereotypes to contend with. There were many challenges, but you have to step up." (...)

30 years ago today, Bernard Anthony Harris became the first African American to walk in space. He and STS-63 crewmate Michael Foale tested new insulation in their spacesuits, but their spacewalk was cut short after the astronauts reported feeling very cold. #BlackHistoryMonth

Now he’s on a new mission — what he calls his “terrestrial mission” — to ensure that all students have access to high-quality STEM education. The retired astronaut serves as the CEO of the National Math and Science Initiative, which works with students and teachers across the country to advance learning in those disciplines.
