1988 został mianowany kierownikiem Sekcji Patologii Klinicznej w Weterynaryjnym Szpitalu Klinicznym na Colorado State University.

Przez rok (1989-1990) pracował jako visiting professor medycyny w Queen Elizabeth Hospital na University of Adelaide w Australii.

1992 został profesorem patologii na wydziale badań klinicznych na Colorado State University.

29.10.1992 został przydzielony jako specjalista ładunku w załodze wahadłowca STS-58.

Głównym ładunkiem misji było laboratorium SLS (Spacelab Life Sciences).

Był to drugi lot Spacelab poświęcony badaniom z zakresu nauk przyrodniczych.
Misja pozyskała więcej danych na temat tego, jak ludzkie ciało dostosowuje się do stanu nieważkości.

Eksperymenty przeprowadzone na załodze Columbii i zwierzętach laboratoryjnych (w tym 48 szczurach), razem z danymi zebranymi podczas misji SLS -1 ( STS-40 ) w 06.1991 dostarczyły najbardziej szczegółowych i powiązanych pomiarów fizjologicznych uzyskanych w środowisku kosmicznym od czasu programu Skylab.

Spacelab Life Sciences 2 składał się z 14 eksperymentów skupiających się na układach sercowo-naczyniowym, regulacyjnym, neuro-przedsionkowym i mięśniowo-szkieletowym organizmu.
Osiem eksperymentów wykorzystywało załogę jako obiekty badawcze, a sześć wykorzystywało szczury.

Jest autorem ponad 100 publikacji naukowych.

‘Nothing But the Highest’: 25 Years Since Shuttle Columbia’s Third-Time-Lucky Launch to Orbit

(...) Liftoff was perfect and spectacular, as Columbia rose atop a column of golden flame to begin her 15th voyage into space. And by the time she returned smoothly to Earth on 1 November, she would wrap up the longest shuttle flight at that time—STS-58’s duration nudged slightly over 14 full days—and had returned a vast amount of medical data, including (controversially) the first euthanasia and dissection of lab rats in space. Speaking at the post-flight press conference, Blaha summarized his perspective of his fourth shuttle launch by paying tribute to all those who made it possible. “I really thinking nothing but the highest,” he said, “of all the people who make this happen.”

SLS-2 Payload Specialist Martin Fettman and Mission Specialist Rhea Seddon perform experiment operations in the General Purpose Work Station (GPWS). The GPWS is designed to provide containment of particulates, urine, blood, feces and other contaminents when it is being used to perform scientific procedures on rodents or other specimens. It is, in effect, a large, sophisticated glovebox.

Martin Fettman (’82, Ph.D, in physiology, professor emeritus of clinical sciences)

First veterinarian in space. He held a faculty appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from 1982 to 2006. He was the prime payload space specialist for Space Lab Life Sciences-2 in 1992 and flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1993.
