Luke Daniel Delaney zostanie ostatnim debiutującym astronautą NASA urodzonym w l. 70. XX wieku (Grace C213 F2).

Crew-13 pilot reflects on career, training, and upcoming science ahead of flight to ISS
written by Sawyer Rosenstein August 4, 2026

(...) Delaney is not the only member of The Flies featured on the upcoming ISS expedition. “Now we’re getting to fly and meet up there with Anil [Menon] and form an expedition with his Soyuz crew and just have one large team up there operating, that’s exciting,” Delaney said. NSF previously spoke with Dr. Anil Menon, who was in the medical profession, including space medicine, before his selection. (...)

Delaney grew up in Deltona in central Florida, just 70 km from the Kennedy Space Center. He recalls being inspired by Space Shuttle launches when growing up.

“In elementary school, if there was a launch, they would typically take the kids outside, and we’d watch the launch from the elementary school,” Delaney recalled. “I definitely remember catching a night launch of a Space Shuttle, and that lights up the sky, and then you can feel the rumble.”

He says that’s part of the reason he’s an astronaut now.

“It’s just hard to fathom back then, you know, watching people go to space and having that interest develop, and then being able to come full circle like this is just a super exciting opportunity,” Delaney said. (...)

From Dream to Reality: Astronaut Luke Delaney

Former Debary resident talks about upcoming International Space Station mission
BY Anthony Leone Brevard County UPDATED 9:54 PM ET Jun. 29, 2026 PUBLISHED 5:36 PM ET Jun. 29, 2026

(...) “Yeah, you know, growing up in Debary, it was pretty rural back in the 90s, at least in my opinion. So, I remember fishing with my dad and fishing really across the different lakes and even down at the St. Johns (River). You got some really good areas there. A lot of time outdoors, so in the woods, doing trail and different things, hiking,” said the married father of two daughters. (...)

Delaney and his wife recently became grandparents, as they welcomed two granddaughters into the world a few months ago.

“So I got two daughters that are around 30 years old and we just added, extended our family with two granddaughters a few months ago, so, exciting,” the new grandfather said. (...)

UNF grad turned astronaut to take first mission to space in September
Jenese Harris, News4JAX anchor/meteorologist Published: August 3, 2026 at 8:58 PM

From Central Florida to the cosmos

Growing up in central Florida, Delaney said watching Space Shuttle launches planted an early seed.

“I think the goal was always kind of there in the background — growing up in central Florida, watching Space Shuttle launches — kind of an inspiration for moving down that track,” he said.

Before NASA, Delaney built a career as a retired Marine, naval aviator and combat veteran. He has logged more than 550 combat flight hours and, including his NASA career, more than 3,900 total flight hours across 48 models of jet, prop and rotary wing aircraft.

“It all just kind of melts together pretty nicely,” Delaney said, “and the latter portion of my career in a test pilot environment — that helped culminate everything for astronaut training and future spaceflight missions.”

NASA selected Delaney to join the 2021 Astronaut Candidate Class, and he reported for duty in January 2022.

Spacewalks and science on the agenda

Once aboard the International Space Station, Delaney said he is looking forward to getting outside the spacecraft.

“Of course we are looking forward to spacewalks, and looking forward to those — and that will be fantastic,” he said. “Any time you get outside of a spaceship and do some maintenance and upgrade things, it just sounds like a good time.”

The crew also has a full science agenda. Research planned for the mission includes work to better characterize blood flow, understand how fluid shifts affect human vision in microgravity, and explore stem cell development — examining how microgravity can be used to scale those opportunities.

Every challenge built on the last

When asked what has been the most challenging chapter of his career — becoming a pilot, a Marine or an astronaut — Delaney said each phase prepared him for the next.

“I think they all had their challenges. And it was perfect at that time for me that those challenges were something that I was ready for,” he said. “They all built on each other to get to this point.”

Now, the challenge ahead will take him further than any before — out of this world entirely.

Delaney is married to Tracey Delaney, and they have two daughters. His parents, Robert and Stephanie Delaney, are from Central Florida.

From DeBary to space: Florida-born NASA astronaut ready for launch to ISS
Rick Neale   Florida Today

(...) “It’s fantastic we’ve got an Osprey (heading to) space," Jack Hewitt, an astrophysicist who chairs UNF's physics department, said in a phone interview, referring the UNF graduate.

"I think Luke is going to be an inspiration to the current and future students at UNF, just being able to do this and showing what’s possible," said Hewitt, who previously worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

“There are a lot of students in engineering and physics and chemistry and biology and all the sciences that can end up working for NASA one day. And so, I really hope that inspires them to pursue that. And not just NASA, but also the thriving space start-up industry that we have going in Florida,” Hewitt said. (...)
