1978 obronił rozprawę doktorską i uzyskał stopień doktora astronomii na University of Washington.

Prowadził badania astronomiczne w Sacramento Peak Solar Observatory w Sunspot w Nowym Meksyku.

Pracował w Sterrekundig Instituut Utrecht w Holandii oraz w Universitäts-Sternwarte Göttingen w Niemczech.

Po powrocie do Stanów Zjednoczonych pracował w Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics w Boulder w stanie Kolorado.

08.1979 po ukończeniu podstawowego szkolenia został przyjęty do Biura Astronautów jako specjalista misji.

Pracował jako operator sprzętu naukowego na samolocie testowym WB 57-F Earth Resources Research Aircraft.
Brał udział w opracowaniu skafandra do EVA.

Podczas misji STS-1 Columbia pełnił funkcję fotografa w samolocie, który śledził wahadłowiec.

Podczas lotów STS-3 i STS-4 pełnił funkcję operatora łączności załogi.
Kierował grupą planowania lotu.

Podczas misji STS-41C Challenger brał udział w 2. EVA, podczas których dokonano naprawy satelity SMM.

STS-61C Columbia

09.02.1987 w komunikacie prasowym NASA 87-2, ogłoszono jego przydział jako specjalisty misji podczas lotu STS-26 Discovery, którego start zaplanowano wówczas na 18.02.1988.

30.06.1989 przeszedł na emeryturę z korpusu astronautów.

Po opuszczeniu korpusu astronautów pełnił funkcję zastępcy prorektora i profesora nadzwyczajnego astronomii na University of Washington w Seattle.

Happy Birthday to George D. "Pinky" Nelson! 🎂 Nelson was selected as a NASA Astronaut in 1978 and went on to fly on 3 Shuttle missions: STS-41-C, STS-61-C, and STS-26.
Did you know he was on the Chase Team for the very first Shuttle mission?

This Month in NASA History: Solar Maximum Mission

(...) Crippen helped select Mission Specialists Terry J. Hart, James D. A. “Ox” van Hoften, and George D. “Pinky” Nelson for the flight, putting a high priority on skilled astronauts who could work well together. Crippen knew the mission would be challenging, especially the extravehicular activity to capture the wobbling SMM. That was assigned to van Hoften and Nelson. “…great guys and hardworking folks, and they needed to be to do this job,” Crippen recalled in an oral history. 

It was the first time a shuttle mission had ever attempted to capture a spacecraft and the crew trained for a year on the bold and intricate maneuvers required. STS-41-C was the second shuttle flight to utilize NASA’s Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). The plan called for Nelson to make an untethered spacewalk in the MMU, use a device to grab a post protruding from the SMM, and stop the satellite from wobbling. With the SMM stabilized, Crippen would fly Challenger into position and van Hoften would use the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) to place it into the payload bay. (...)

Congrats to George "Pinky" Nelson, who turns 75 OTD (b. 1950). Selected in 1978 (Group 8 "TFNGs") as a Mission Specialist, he logged over 17d & 9+ hrs on 2 EVAs during 3 shuttle flights between 1984 & 1988 (STS-41C, -61C & -26). Upon leaving NASA in 1989, he returned to academia.
