Virgin Galactic says it has hired two veteran pilots, including a former NASA astronaut, to help bring space tourists to new heights above Earth.

For alumnus and astronaut Rick Sturckow, the journey to the stars began in the dirt.

After graduating from high school at the age of 16, Sturckow, a racing enthusiast, landed a job working on the pit crew of an off-road racing team. At one event in Baja California, he noticed one distinctive truck on the track, emblazoned with the words “Cal Poly.” He asked the pit boss about it.

“He said, ‘Oh, that’s a bunch of college kids from San Luis Obispo who come down here to compete with professional off-road racers,’” says Sturckow. “Well, I wanted to go do that!” (...)

We temporarily minimized our footprint in New Mexico following the new two-week health order put in place for COVID. This flight will represent a number of firsts: it will be our first spaceflight from our commercial headquarters at Spaceport America; it’s the first-time humans will fly into space from the state of New Mexico; and our left-seat Pilot for the flight, CJ Sturckow, will become the first astronaut to have flown into space from three different U.S states.

Now CJ is a member of our Pilots Corps and has flown our spaceship into space twice - taking his total number of spaceflights to 6! When we completed the first human spaceflight from New Mexico, CJ, became the first astronaut to have flown into space from three different states.

Happy birthday to astronaut Rick Sturckow! After graduating from high school, Rick worked as a mechanic, built his own stock car, and raced in over 60 Baja and circle-track races before joining the US Marine Corps and earning his wings in 1987.
