Mysterious Shiyan Research Satellite Launched From Cloudy Jiuquan [Long March 2C/YZ-1S]
Jack C. Mar 27, 2026

Stated to be for space environment research, Shiyan-33 was boosted into its target orbit by an additional stage to start its mission.

On March 27th at 12:11 pm China Standard Time (04:11 am Universal Coordinated Time), a Long March 2C lifted off from Launch Site 94 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, coated in low-lying clouds, carrying a single payload toward sun-synchronous orbit.

Shiyan-33 (试验三十三号卫星) was announced to be the satellite delivered into orbit, described as being tasked with space environment research and related scientific experiments. No enterprise has claimed to have developed the satellite.

With its brief tasked purpose, Shiyan-33 may be similar to May 2024’s Shiyan-23 (试验二十三号卫)1, July 2025’s Shiyan-28B-01 (试验二十八号B星01星)2, August 2025’s Shiyan-28B-02 (试验二十八号B星02星)3, and September 2025’s Shiyan-29 (试验二十九号)4, due to the simiarly stated task and requirement of an additional stage for fine-tuned orbital adjustments. A difference from those four satellites and today’s is a change from ‘monitoring’ to ‘research ’ with regard to ‘space environment’.

The Shiyan (试验) satellite designation is used for technology development spacecraft, and the name literally translates to test or experiment. Shijian (实践), meaning practice, is a similar designation for more mature technology tests.

ssisting in the delivery of Shiyan-33 today was the Yuanzheng-1S (远征一号S) upper-stage, for the optional boost stage series’ 35th flight to date. Yuanzheng (远征) stages are used to bring payloads into higher or multiple orbits across much of the Long March fleet, like the Long March 2 launchers, Long March 3A family, and Long March 5 series.

In a post-launch blog-post, the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology was light on comments other than saying that the Long March 2C launch vehicle will conduct high-frequency missions this year. The vehicle has so far flown twice this year, delivering satellites for Algeria, with this launch being the first after a month-long pause of all Chinese launches.

Today’s launch was the 87th launch of the Long March 2C, and the 635th launch of the Long March launch vehicle series. This was also the 17th launch from China in 2026.

Pierwsza rakieta Kinetica-2 (LiJian-2 Y1) została wystrzelona z „Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Experimental Zone” {...}

18. start kosmiczny Chin w 2026.
Pierwszy lot RN LiJian-2.
12.start z serii RN LiJian.

Rakieta LiJian-2 została opracowana z myślą o dużej ładowności, niskich kosztach i wysokiej częstotliwości użytkowania.

Podczas pierwszego lotu zweryfikowano przede wszystkim trzy kluczowe technologie: technologię zastosowania konfiguracji CBC, technologię projektowania konstrukcji i procesu produkcyjnego gładkiego zbiornika cylindrycznego o dużej średnicy oraz technologię separacji poziomej z dużej osłony aerodynamicznej.

Satelita Xinzhengcheng 02 to eksperymentalny ładunek opracowany przez Akademię Innowacji Mikrosatelitów Chińskiej Akademii Nauk.
Ma on zdolność do 3-letniego lotu orbitalnego, waży 4,2 tony i wykorzystuje zintegrowaną, jednomodułową konstrukcję.
Wykorzystuje on nowe technologie i procesy w swoich hermetycznych sekcjach, układzie napędowym i laserowym module IMU.

China launches Lijian-2 Y1 carrier rocket
Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2026-03-30 23:43:30

JIUQUAN, March 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday launched a Lijian-2 Y1 carrier rocket with three satellites onboard.

The rocket blasted off at 7:00 p.m. (Beijing Time) from a commercial aerospace innovation pilot zone in northwest China and successfully sent the satellites into the planned orbit.

Among the satellites was the Qingzhou Cargo Spacecraft Test Vehicle, developed by the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The test flight carried 27 projects with a total payload of 1.02 tonnes and will conduct in-orbit tests at altitudes ranging from 200 to 600 kilometers.

The launch marked the first flight of the Lijian-2 rocket. According to the developers, it is China's first launch vehicle using a "common booster core" design. The rocket stands 53 meters tall, with a liftoff weight of 625 tonnes and a thrust of 753 tonnes. It has a carrying capacity of 8 tonnes to a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit and 12 tonnes for low Earth orbit.

"The Lijian-2 rocket marks a new milestone in the development of China's next-generation space cargo transportation system," said Yang Haoliang, commander of the Lijian-2 rocket. He noted that this marks a shift from reliance on a single rocket type or approach to a more systematic framework supported by multiple launch vehicles, enabling mutual backup and flexible deployment.

This systematic capability, he added, is fundamentally important for ensuring the long-term stable operation of the space station and for enhancing the safety and reliability of cargo transportation.

Yang said developers are currently working on reusable rocket technology. They have already completed initial tests on a smaller vehicle to verify key technologies such as controlled landing, and they plan to conduct further recovery tests later this year.

According to the developers, commercial rockets are expected to play a growing role in national space missions, helping to reduce costs and improve efficiency while maintaining high safety standards. ■

China Focus: China launches in-orbit experiment projects in space hospital quest
Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2026-04-01 20:37:00

(...) The test vehicle features 27 projects with a total payload of 1.02 tonnes and will conduct in-orbit tests at altitudes ranging from 200 to 600 kilometers. (...)

Xu Zhiming, executive director of SUAT's Future Medicine Center and dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, was the first to propose this vision. According to Xu, the construction of the future space hospital will follow a three-step approach.

First, cutting-edge medical projects were adapted for aerospace engineering and placed aboard the Qingzhou cargo spacecraft, and this will be followed by in-orbit experiments and tests. After this a space hospital outpost will be established to conduct space emergency rescue and space scientific research.

In the next step, medical modules for the future space hospital will be constructed on the moon or planets to explore health protection for lunar landing and space travel.

The in-orbit projects include use of a contact-type UV non-invasive phototherapy device developed by Gu Ying, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of SUAT's Future Medicine Center.

The phototherapy device can simulate specific wavelengths in sunlight that promote vitamin D synthesis in the human body. Regular use by astronauts aboard space stations or deep-space spacecraft can safely and efficiently maintain vitamin D levels in the body, preventing vitamin D deficiency.

In microgravity environments, reduced skeletal loading leads to rapid bone density loss at a rate of about 1 percent to 2 percent per month. Maintaining appropriate vitamin D levels through this device can directly support calcium metabolism, and work with space exercise and pharmaceutical interventions to form a more comprehensive bone health protection system.

Also aboard the cargo spacecraft is a plasma therapeutic device for refractory wounds, jointly developed by Xu Zhiming and Chen Zhitong from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Xu said that in the microgravity environment of space, changes in human body fluid distribution and abnormal blood circulation can significantly slow wound healing and make wounds prone to becoming chronic.

The plasma therapeutic device can directly promote cell proliferation and collagen synthesis by releasing reactive oxygen and nitrogen particles, accelerating tissue regeneration to counteract healing delays caused by microgravity.

The device does not require liquid or gel media, as the plasma acts on wounds in gas form, avoiding liquid splashing or contamination of the cabin environment in weightless conditions. The device can also disinfect equipment surfaces such as medical tools and wearable device interfaces, achieving multi-functional use in one machine.

Xu said they will continue to utilize Shenzhou spacecraft for in-orbit experiments and tests to serve four major scenarios, namely space stations, lunar landings, Mars exploration and future space travel, and extend space medical achievements from space applications to civilian benefits.

SUAT Party secretary Zhu Dijian noted that the health challenges astronauts face in space are the university's key focus. The SUAT brings together strengths in medical devices, biomedicine, innovative medical technology and aerospace technology from institutions such as the IAMCAS, with the aim of building a space medical platform for the future. ■

China successfully demonstrates metal 3D printing in space
Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2026-04-28 19:24:45

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese research institutions have recently completed a demonstration of space metal 3D printing technology in orbit, with potential applications in space manufacturing and maintenance.

The Institute of Mechanics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in collaboration with the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of CAS, successfully carried out the demonstration in the previously launched Qingzhou Cargo Spacecraft Test Vehicle, Science and Technology Daily reported on Monday.

Space metal 3D printing technology faces many challenges. It has to address special physical mechanisms such as metal droplet transfer, liquid bridge stability, and melt pool evolution under microgravity conditions, and also needs to resolve a series of engineering challenges, including payload lightweighting, launch vibrations, energy interface adaptation, telemetry and remote control, autonomous operation, and in-orbit safety.

During the demonstration, the 3D printing device aboard the Qingzhou spacecraft autonomously initiated operation according to ground commands. Using a laser wire-feed process, it completed metal melt deposition in a stable and smooth manner, successfully verifying the reliability of multiple remote-controlled start-stop cycles.

The demonstration also tested core capabilities, including payload compatibility with the spacecraft platform, full-process automated execution, data and image transmission, and metal melt deposition processes in the space environment.

The technology is expected to help transform the traditional space mission model of "bring what you need" into "make what you need." In the future, it can be used in scenarios such as in-orbit manufacturing and maintenance, spare part production for space facilities, structural component repair, and autonomous support for deep-space missions. ■
