New spacesuits debuted for Shenzhou-21's first spacewalk
Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2025-12-10 01:26:15

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Shenzhou-21 astronauts Zhang Lu and Wu Fei completed the first series of extravehicular activities (EVAs) of their mission on Tuesday, donning newly delivered extravehicular spacesuits for their inaugural use in space.

The mission marked the debut of the space station's D and E extravehicular spacesuits, which were delivered by the Tianzhou-9 cargo spacecraft on July 15 as part of the second-generation Feitian spacesuit series. While maintaining white as the primary color, one suit features a red trim and the other a blue trim.

"The EVAs fully demonstrated the critical role of human capabilities in extravehicular operations, with the suits providing robust safety assurance for astronauts," said Zhai Zhihong from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.

The operational lifespan of the suits has been upgraded from the previous standard of 15 EVAs over three years to 20 EVAs within four years, according to the center.

The second-generation Feitian extravehicular spacesuits have reliably supported all EVAs conducted during both the construction and operational phases of China's space station. ■

New vlog of Shenzhou-21 crew details advanced in-orbit medical experiments
Source: Xinhua Editor: huaxia 2026-04-13 19:53:30

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) has released a new video diary offering a detailed look at the daily work of the three Shenzhou-21 astronauts aboard the Tiangong space station, with a focus on a series of advanced aerospace medical experiments conducted 160 days into their mission.

In the video released on Sunday, astronauts Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang can be seen conducting a variety of in-orbit tasks. Wearing blue short-sleeved polo shirts, they move with practiced ease between equipment racks, handling samples and inspecting hardware.

The crew members remain in good physical condition and continue to work with high coordination and motivation, the CMSA said.

The astronaut trio has completed a series of cognitive function and emergency decision-making tests, as part of ongoing efforts to monitor how long-term spaceflight affects human performance in isolation and microgravity, according to the CMSA.

In the video, a key highlight is the crew's use of a space Raman spectrometer to analyze the metabolic components of urine samples. The data collected will help refine metabolic indicator systems and evaluation criteria for astronaut health during long-duration spaceflight.

The three astronauts also collected and froze saliva samples, which will be analyzed on the ground to help researchers study gut flora and digestive function.

The astronauts completed blood sample collection according to experimental plans covering bone metabolism regulation, integrative omics and sleep rhythms in space. They used a centrifuge to process the samples before storing them for return to Earth.

In the field of microgravity physical sciences, the crew replaced samples in the fluid physics experiment cabinet, exchanged burners and gas cylinders in the combustion science cabinet, and cleaned samples from the containerless experiment chamber.

The astronauts were also seen maintaining their health by exercising on a treadmill and using resistance bands in the microgravity environment.

The Shenzhou-21 manned spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Oct. 31, 2025. The Shenzhou-21 crew completed their mission's first series of extravehicular activities (EVAs) on Dec. 9 last year and the second on March 16. ■

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The Shenzhou-21 crew aboard China's orbiting space station completed their mission's third series of extravehicular activities (EVAs) on Friday, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

The astronaut trio -- Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang -- worked for roughly 5.5 hours and completed their tasks at 1:36 a.m. (Beijing Time), assisted by the space station's robotic arm and a team on Earth. They completed the installation of space debris protection equipment and the inspection of extravehicular equipment.

Zhang Lu and Wu Fei, who conducted spacewalk operations, returned safely to the Wentian lab module.

To date, Zhang Lu has conducted 7 extravehicular activities, setting a new record for the most spacewalks by a Chinese astronaut.

The CMSA disclosed that since the second EVAs on March 16, the Shenzhou-21 astronauts have been steadily advancing their experimental missions in space life science, human body research, and microgravity physics.

They have continued to conduct station environmental monitoring, equipment inspection and maintenance, and supply organization. The crew has also completed full-system pressure emergency drills, in-orbit emergency rescue training, and EVAs preparations.

To date, the three astronauts have been in orbit for over five months, and are in good working and living conditions.

After a thorough analysis and evaluation, the CMSA plans to extend the in-orbit stay of the Shenzhou-21 crew by approximately one month, so as to further verify the technologies regarding the long-term stay of astronauts in orbit and fully use the supplies delivered by the Shenzhou-22 spacecraft in an emergency launch. ■
