On Sunday, November 16 at 9:21 p.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched NASA’s Sentinel-6B mission from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

This was the third flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously supported two Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage landed on Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Sentinel-6B will use radar to bounce signals off of the ocean surface to deliver continuous ocean topography measurements. The mission also will collect high-resolution vertical profiles of temperature to assess temperature changes in Earth’s atmosphere and improve weather prediction models. It took over from Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, a twin of Sentinel-6B, which Falcon 9 launched five years ago from SLC-4E on November 21, 2020.

2) Pierwsze zdjęcia z wysokościomierza opublikowano kilka tygodni po udanym wystrzeleniu satelity.
Wstępne pomiary z wysokościomierza satelitarnego Poseidon-4 pokazują, w jaki sposób Sentinel-6B pomoże śledzić zmiany poziomu morza, prądy oceaniczne i warunki falowania, a także monitorować poziom wody w jeziorach i wodach śródlądowych.

The first altimeter images from the European-US ocean-monitoring satellite Copernicus Sentinel-6B have been released just weeks after its successful launch on 17 November 2025, offering an early demonstration of how the mission will enhance the global monitoring of oceans, coasts and inland water bodies.
Published on 16 December 2025

Ground tracks of the Copernicus altimeter missions Sentinel-6B and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich (respectively S6B and S6MF represented by thick lines), showing the Gulf Stream current in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the United States.
Colours along the tracks show sea level relative to a long-term average: red indicates higher-than-usual sea level, blue indicates lower-than-usual. Knowledge of Gulf Stream current systems is important for both ship routing and fisheries. The background image shows a global map of sea-surface height anomalies based on satellite altimeter data produced by the Copernicus Marine Service for
26 November 2025. All altimeter tracks display data collected on that same day. Image illustrative and not for operational use.

3) 30.10.2026 satelita wszedł do służby operacyjnej.
rzewidywać burze i huragany,
chronić społeczności przybrzeżne.

The new Copernicus high-precision altimetry satellite tracks rising seas, storms and El Niño, helping to protect coastal communities, improve safety at sea and advance climate monitoring.
Published on 30 October 2026

(...) Copernicus uses Sentinel-6B’s observations across its services, including its climate services, which monitor long-term changes in the ocean, and its ocean forecasts. These forecasts help show major currents, and ships will change course depending on where they lie and the direction of the waves. A high-resolution mode on both Sentinel-6 satellites gives detailed measurements near coastlines and over inland waters, supporting safer maritime navigation, coastal protection and water-resource management.

Global average sea level has risen by more than 11.5cm since December 1992, and the pace is accelerating, rising 2.8cm during the first decade and as much as 4.0cm over the most recent decade. The rise is driven by a combination of melting glaciers and ice sheets, and ocean warming which causes water to expand. To track sea level rise, Sentinel-6B and its twin, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich launched in November 2020, will provide data on sea level across up to 95% of the ice-free ocean, along with ocean currents, wave height and wind speed, and water levels in rivers and lakes.

“No other technology can follow changes in sea level across the whole globe as consistently as satellite altimetry, and its data are essential for both climate research and policy and weather and ocean forecasting,” says Phil Evans, Director-General of EUMETSAT. “Around 900 million people live in low-lying coastal areas worldwide, and weather and ocean services across our Member States rely on Sentinel-6 data to protect people, infrastructure and ecosystems. Combined with altimetry from Copernicus Sentinel-3, Sentinel-6B gives a fuller picture of the oceans, and with wind and atmospheric data from our Metop satellites it supports weather forecasts every day. This European–US mission shows once again what we can achieve together.” (...)
