Misja jest częścią konstelacji Proliferated Architecture NRO, która jest budowana i wdrażana przez SpaceX i Northrop Grumman.
Oczekuje się, że konstelacja ta poprawi terminowość dostępu, zróżnicuje ścieżki komunikacyjne, zwiększy odporność oraz wyeliminuje pojedyncze punkty awarii.
Falcon B1103 był użyty wcześniej w misjach Starlink Group 17-35 i  Starlink Group 17-42.

  19.06. o 08:50:45 z w Vandenberg wystrzelona została RN Falcon-9R, która wyniosła na orbitę 9 satelitów Starshield (misja NRO L-179) o oficjalnych nazwach USA-610 do USA-618.
Pierwszy stopień RN (B1100.3) w T+8' wylądował na LZ-4.

Czternasty dedykowany start z budowanymi przez SpaceX i Northrop Grummann satelitami szpiegowskimi dla Narodowego Biura Rozpoznania (NRO), amerykańskiej agencji wywiadowczej. Nowa konstelacja ma składać się z setek pojazdów zbudowanych na bazie platformy satelitarnej Starlink i pozwalać NRO na bardzo częstą obserwację celów niemal na całym świecie. Powstaje ona w ramach prowadzonej przez SpaceX inicjatywy Starshield, której celem jest wykorzystanie technologii Starlink na rzecz bezpieczeństwa narodowego. Na szczycie rakiety znalazło się prawdopodobnie kilkanaście satelitów Starshield.

On Friday, June 19 at 1:50 a.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched the NROL-179 mission from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

This was the third flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched two Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage landed on Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

SpaceX launches intelligence-gathering satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office

(...) The mission, dubbed NROL-179, launched an undisclosed number of satellites into orbit as part of what the NRO calls its proliferated architecture constellation. These are believed to be Starshield satellites, a government variant of SpaceX’s Starlink, though neither the NRO nor SpaceX has confirmed on the record that this is the case. (...)

Fewer than eight minutes after liftoff, B1103 returned to California for touchdown at Landing Zone 4. This was the 35th landing at that site and the 626th booster landing for SpaceX to date.

This was SpaceX’s 14th launch supporting the NRO’s low Earth orbit constellation and the third of the year so far. The NRO said it envisions having “hundreds of small satellites on orbit” in order to “provide greater revisit rates Ian increased coverage. And even eliminate single points of failure.”

The agency hasn’t disclosed the desired size of the constellation or many details about the scope of the network. It has said that it’s Geospatial Intelligence Systems Acquisitions Directorate (GEOINT) does contribute components to the proliferated architecture.(...)
