18.08.2001 o 13:42 UTC rozpoczęła się EVA-2 z udziałem astronautów Dana Barry'ego i Pata Forrestera.
Głównym zadaniem tego spaceru było rozciągnięcie 2 przewodów elektrycznych wzdłuż zewnętrznej powierzchni modułu Destiny.
Jest to przygotowanie do kolejnych spacerów podczas misji STS-110.
Wszystkie zadania EVA-2 wykonano z powodzeniem.
Zakończyła się ona o 19:11, po 5 godzinach i 29 minutach.

25 years ago this week, STS-105 astronauts Daniel Barry and Patrick G. Forrester
conducted two spacewalks to build the International Space Station.
They also mounted the first Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE)
packages on the exterior of the station, helping us better understand how the materials we use for
space exploration are affected by long-term exposure to space.

For years, MISSE experiments with hundreds of samples of materials and technology mounted
on them have been attached to the exterior of the station to see how
the various samples hold up to the space environment.
In low-Earth orbit, these samples are exposed to extreme temperature swings,
solar and charged‑particle radiation, atomic oxygen, micrometeoroids, and the
vacuum of space—conditions impossible to fully replicate on here on Earth.
By testing everything from coatings and fabrics to solar cells and electronics,
MISSE has helped engineers create spacecraft hardware that’s tougher and longer lasting.

See for yourself! On the right you can see how the samples on one of the panels installed
by the STS-105 astronauts changed over their nearly 4 years in space.

While we're at it, let's go back further. ⌛ Decades before MISSE,
NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), a bus‑sized satellite, was deployed in April 1984
by space shuttle Challenger and spent nearly six years in orbit.
When astronauts retrieved LDEF in 1990, we discovered just how harsh low Earth orbit can be:
plastics darkened, metals eroded, coatings degraded, and impacts from micrometeoroids
and orbital debris were visible.
The lessons from LDEF reshaped spacecraft design and directly influenced
the next generation of material‑exposure programs—including MISSE.
