Burt Rutan was alarmed to see that the plane he had designed was so loaded with fuel that the wingtips dragged along the ground as it taxied down the runway. He grabbed the radio to warn the pilot, his older brother Dick Rutan. But Dick never heard the message.

On December 23, 1986, nine days, three minutes, and 44 seconds after taking off, Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager touched down at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, in the Rutan Voyager aircraft to finish the first flight around the world made without landing or refueling.

We join the aviation community in remembering pilot Dick Rutan, who recently died. Rutan was an officer in the Air Force, a Vietnam War veteran, and a test pilot, and made history as co-pilot of the Rutan Voyager on the first non-stop flight around the world without refueling.

Burt Rutan, whose innovative designs have captured the world of flight ranging from homebuilt aircraft to space vehicles, will return to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2024 with appearances and forums coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his VariEze canard aircraft design.

The EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024 schedule of forums and presentations with legendary designer Burt Rutan has been finalized and will include six events over five days on July 22-26.

Dick Rutan zmarł wczesnym wieczorem w wyniku ciężkiej infekcji płuc w szpitalu Kootenai w Coeur d' Alene w stanie Idaho. Ostatni dzień spędził w towarzystwie przyjaciół i rodziny, w tym młodszego brata Burta – znanego konstruktora lotniczego, i żony Kris Rutan, z którą był od 25 lat.
