Szkoda, do tej pory chodząc do KSC i patrząc na kapsułę Apollo 14 zawsze myślałem sobie że jest jedna żywa osoba która tą kapsuła leciała....

To już tylko żyje 7 spośród Tych , którzy odcisnęli swoje ślady  na gruncie Księżyca.
Edgar Mitchell jest 80-tym nieżyjącym Ziemianinem, któremu dane było chociaż raz zobaczyć Ziemię w locie orbitalnym.
A dziś prześladowały mnie dziwne liczby.

Astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, who was part of the Apollo 14 space crew that flew to the moon in 1971, died late Thursday in West Palm Beach, according to his family.

Mitchell, 85, lived in suburban Lake Worth and died at a local hospice at about 10 p.m. Thursday, his daughter, former West Palm Beach City Commissioner Kimberly Mitchell told The Palm Beach Post.

On his return flight from the moon, he said in a 2004 Palm Beach Post profile, he had a cosmic awakening that changed his life.

‘I got to look out the window a lot,” he recalled. “I had a powerful insight looking at the heavens. Suddenly, it became damn personal.”

He would write in his 1996 memoir, The Way of the Explorer, that he experienced “nothing short of an overwhelming sense of universal connectedness.”

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recalled Mitchell marveling at the stunning view of Earth from space.

"Edgar spoke poetically about seeing our home planet from the Moon saying, 'Suddenly, from behind the rim of the Moon, in long, slow-motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel, a light, delicate sky-blue sphere laced with slowly swirling veils of white, rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery.

"'It takes more than a moment to fully realize this is Earth... home.'"

Bolden added: "He is one of the pioneers in space exploration on whose shoulders we now stand."

Buzz Aldrin, the second person on the Moon, echoed that on Twitter, calling Mitchell a "lunar pioneer."

Feb. 5, 2016 — Edgar Mitchell, who 45 years ago became the sixth man to walk on the moon, died on Thursday (Feb. 4), on the eve of his lunar landing anniversary. He was 85.

The lunar module pilot aboard NASA's Apollo 14 mission in 1971, Mitchell died peacefully in his sleep after a short illness at a hospice facility located near his home in West Palm Beach, Fla., his family confirmed. (...)
