Dziś przypada 100. rocznica urodzin astronauty.
7. (9) człowiek w kosmosie.
Wchodził w skład legendarnej 1-szej grupy astronautów powołanej w 1959 roku.
Był jednym z pionierów przecierających szlaki ku księżycowym wyprawom ludzi.
Walter Marty Schirra odbył 3 loty kosmiczne w ramach 3. różnych programów załogowych o łącznym czasie trwania 12d 07h 13m 38s.

Wally Schirra, only astronaut to fly Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, dies at 84

May 3, 2007 — One of the first seven "original" American astronauts and the only one to fly on Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions, Walter "Wally" Schirra died on Thursday (May 3) after being hospitalized for a heart attack. He was earlier diagnosed with cancer. (...)

With the successful return of Apollo 7 astronauts Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and Walt Cunningham, following an 11-day mission in Earth orbit, the spacecraft which would one day transport humans to the Moon completed its inaugural shakedown voyage. The flight of Schirra’s crew finally laid the ghosts of the Apollo 1 fire to rest and enabled NASA to boldly press ahead with its plan to direct Apollo 8 to perform the first piloted expedition to lunar orbit.
