Coming back is, she says, the hardest part. “The six months after, when you’re still wrapping up the mission … you’re back but you’re not done.” While she writes of feeling at home even as she is about to take off, the “undeniable risk of a sudden and violent death tonight” looming, what she refers to as “ordinary life” is clearly the scary part: “The fact you have to grocery shop, sit in traffic, all those things that you just don’t have up there, cook your food – it’s not just a packet where you add some water and it’s ready.”

Il compagno di AstroSamantha è Lionel Ferra, ingegnere francese ed istruttore di astronauti che lavora proprio presso l’Esa di Colonia.

You were selected as an astronaut in 2009, and yet when the good news came, you actually missed the call. How did that happen?

It was down to just 10 of us at the end and I was incredibly tense, waiting to know. The ESA [European Space Agency] had announced that on the 25th of May there was going to be this public announcement in France of who they had selected. But we were getting to like two days before the press conference and we still haven’t heard. And then finally it was like nine o’clock and I had given up for that day. And so I go and take a shower and I get out and I see I have a missed call—and the number is from France. So what do I do, call back? You don’t call people back like so late at night. And then an email came in and it was this very short email that says you know, if you’re available we would love for you to join us on Wednesday morning in Paris. (...)

E, nel corso della sua missione, Samantha Cristoforetti non esclude nemmeno una “passeggiata spaziale”. «Mi sono addestrata per una passeggiata spaziale, con la tuta russa», ha detto oggi a un gruppo internazionale di giornalisti, tra cui c’eravamo anche noi di IoDonna, «potrebbe esserci la possibilità di una passeggiata spaziale con un collega russo».

La decisione finale, però, «verrà presa nei prossimi tempi, sulla base della programmazione dell’attività sulla Stazione Spaziale». (...)

Quanto e cosa ci sia di simbolico ognuno lo deve decidere per sé. Io dico solo che Minerva – nome che avrei voluto dare già anche alla missione Futura – è la dea della saggezza: che sia di buon auspicio per tutti noi sia nel microcosmo quotidiano e nelle relazioni affettive che nel macrocosmo delle grandi relazioni internazionali. Noi abbiamo la responsabilità di concentrarci sulla nostra missione, mettendo a frutto l’addestramento e portando a complimento il lavoro tante persone. Ogni nostra azione, anche la più semplice, è il risultato di anni di lavoro di team di ricercatori e ricercatrici.
